458 SOCOM XL Firearms, Ammunition and Components

458 SOCOM XL expands the capabilities of the .458 SOCOM platform by allowing extra-long projectiles to be loaded to a greater overall cartridge length. The chamber remains 458 SOCOM; the difference is the additional cartridge-length capability provided by compatible firearms and magazines.

Traditional .458 SOCOM ammunition is constrained by the cartridge overall length required for the AR-15 magazine. With long, heavy .458-caliber projectiles, that limitation can require the projectile to be seated deeper into the case. A 458 SOCOM XL-compatible platform allows these projectiles to be seated farther out, reclaiming usable case capacity while accommodating projectile designs that extend beyond the traditional AR-15 magazine envelope.

Terminal 458 brings together Chattahoochee Munitions firearms, barreled actions, modified AICS magazines and ammunition configured around this capability. CM offers XL-capable configurations in both the CM7S bolt-action platform and CM10 large-frame semi-automatic platform.

What 458 SOCOM XL Changes

Terminal 458 centers on a straightforward distinction: 458 SOCOM XL retains the .458 SOCOM chamber while allowing a longer cartridge overall length in compatible firearms and magazines. Conventional .458 SOCOM ammunition is commonly packaged around the length available in an AR-15 magazine. That envelope can become restrictive when a long, heavy projectile occupies more of the cartridge case.

The XL configuration gives Chattahoochee Munitions room to accommodate these longer projectile designs in the CM7S bolt-action and CM10 large-frame platforms. It is a firearm-and-magazine compatibility feature, not a separate chamber or a claim that ordinary AR-15 magazines accept XL-length ammunition.

Why Heavy Subsonic Projectiles Matter

Heavy subsonic ammunition is the primary reason we developed the Terminal 458 system. Projectile design and length influence how an ammunition manufacturer can configure a cartridge within a given overall-length limit. By providing more length in a compatible platform, 458 SOCOM XL creates space for the long .458-caliber projectiles used in our heavy subsonic offerings.

Terminal 458 includes both the CM7S bolt-action and CM10 semi-automatic families, along with compatible magazines and ammunition designated for the intended platform. Those designations matter: customers should select ammunition specifically identified for their firearm rather than assume every XL cartridge is interchangeable between bolt-action and semi-automatic configurations. 458 SOCOM and Cartridge Standardization

The .458 SOCOM cartridge is not currently standardized by SAAMI. “458 SOCOM XL” describes the additional cartridge-length capability of the compatible CM system; it does not mean the firearm has a different chamber. Because cartridge length and magazine compatibility are central to this system, follow the ammunition and magazine specifications stated on the individual CM product pages.
