300 Blackout Firearms Designed Around Suppressed Performance
Sector 300 brings together Chattahoochee Munitions’ complete 300 Blackout ecosystem: CM15 semi-automatic rifles, pistols and SBRs; conventional and SD suppressor-under-handguard configurations; CM7S bolt-action firearms; CM15 upper receiver assemblies; CM7S barreled actions; and CM-vetted magazines.
CM approaches 300 BLK as a subsonic-first cartridge. The 10–10.5-inch range provides the optimal balance of complete powder burn, compact handling and suppressed performance. Our 10.5-inch CM15 firearms combine a 1:5 twist barrel, pistol-length gas, a Superlative Arms adjustable gas block and an ODIN Works adjustable buffer.
The compact 7.5-inch CM15 also uses a 1:5 twist barrel and pistol-length gas. The 5-inch CM15 uses a 1:5 twist barrel with micro-length gas because the barrel is too short to accommodate a conventional pistol-length system. The 16-inch CM15 retains pistol-length gas for dependable subsonic operation but uses a 1:7 twist and provides a conventional rifle configuration for customers who do not want an NFA-length barrel.
Every complete CM semi-automatic firearm is assembled, test-fired and baseline-tuned as a complete operating system. Standalone CM15 upper receiver assemblies are manufactured with the correct gas architecture and adjustable components but require final tuning with the customer’s lower receiver, buffer system, ammunition and suppressor.
For shooters who want maximum suppression performance without semi-automatic cycling requirements, the CM7S provides a compact bolt-action alternative. Every CM7S 300 BLK configuration uses a 1:5 twist Mos-Tek 416R stainless-steel barrel with 5R rifling, a shouldered crown and 5/8×24 muzzle threads.

300 BLACKOUT CALIBER OVERVIEW
Purpose-Driven 300 Blackout Platforms
300 Blackout is most compelling when treated as a complete suppressed system rather than simply another cartridge that fits an AR-15. Barrel length, twist rate, ammunition, suppressor architecture, gas delivery, buffer mass and magazine selection all influence performance.
Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures Sector 300 firearms around those relationships. Customers can choose a CM15 semi-automatic platform with adjustable gas and buffer systems or a CM7S bolt-action platform that does not depend on ammunition pressure or suppressor backpressure to cycle.
The Sector 300 family also includes conventional and SD suppressor-under-handguard firearms, configurable CM15 upper receiver assemblies, CM7S barreled actions and CM-vetted magazines for both operating systems.
Why CM Treats 300 Blackout as a Subsonic-First Cartridge
Supersonic ammunition expands the versatility of 300 Blackout, but other cartridges provide stronger dedicated supersonic performance. CM believes the defining purpose of 300 BLK is firing heavy subsonic projectiles from a compact, suppressible firearm.
Subsonic ammunition keeps the projectile below the local speed of sound, eliminating the ballistic crack associated with a supersonic projectile. When paired with an appropriate suppressor, it can substantially reduce the firearm’s overall sound signature. The suppressor must still control muzzle blast, and a semi-automatic action continues to produce mechanical noise as it cycles.
This is why platform selection matters. A CM7S bolt action remains closed during the firing event and does not need propellant gas or suppressor backpressure to operate. A CM15 provides semi-automatic capability but requires the ammunition, suppressor, gas system and buffer system to work together.
Read the complete 300 Blackout Subsonic Guide for a deeper examination of barrel length, twist rate, projectile stability and suppressor use.
The CM 10–10.5-Inch and 1:5-Twist Standard
Based on CM’s experience, the optimal general-purpose 300 Blackout barrel is approximately 10–10.5 inches with a 1:5 twist. Powder utilization is effectively complete within approximately 9–10.5 inches, and CM does not see a useful velocity advantage beyond 10.5 inches for the cartridge’s intended subsonic application.
The 10.5-inch CM15 represents CM’s preferred balance of powder utilization, heavy-projectile stability, suppressed performance and compact handling. Its 1:5 twist stabilizes long, heavy subsonic projectiles better than a 1:7 twist.
The 7.5-inch CM15 retains a 1:5 twist and pistol-length gas in a shorter, more maneuverable firearm. It provides an intermediate option for customers who prioritize compact handling but want more barrel length and a less specialized operating system than the 5-inch platform.
The 5-inch CM15 serves a different purpose: maximum compactness. Because the projectile has very little barrel travel, the 5-inch barrel requires a 1:5 twist. It also uses micro-length gas because the barrel is physically too short to accommodate a conventional pistol-length gas system.
The 16-inch CM15 uses a 1:7 twist and pistol-length gas. It provides a conventional rifle configuration for customers who do not want a pistol or registered short-barreled rifle. The longer barrel serves a legitimate classification and handling preference, but it is not CM’s technical optimum for subsonic 300 BLK and does not provide a meaningful velocity advantage over the 10.5-inch configuration.
Current CM15 Barrel and Gas-System Architecture
- 5-inch CM15: 1:5 twist with micro-length gas for maximum compactness
- 7.5-inch CM15: 1:5 twist with pistol-length gas for compact CQB, SBR and suppressed applications
- 10.5-inch CM15: 1:5 twist with pistol-length gas for optimal general-purpose suppressed performance
- 16-inch CM15: 1:7 twist with pistol-length gas for a conventional rifle configuration
Every current CM15 300 BLK barrel uses a shouldered crown, a .750-inch gas journal and 5/8×24 muzzle threads. CM15 firearms also offer muzzle-device options so the firearm can be configured around the customer’s intended suppressor mounting system.
CM15 Semi-Automatic 300 Blackout
The CM15 300 Blackout family includes compact pistols and SBRs, SD configurations and conventional rifles. Every complete CM15 combines the appropriate gas-system length with a Superlative Arms adjustable gas block and an ODIN Works adjustable buffer.
These components allow the operating system to be matched to the chosen ammunition and suppressor. This matters because even two different subsonic loads can produce different pressure curves and cycling behavior.
The goal is not to introduce the maximum possible amount of gas. A properly tuned CM15 should receive only the gas required to feed, fire, extract, eject and lock the bolt open after the final round with an appropriate reliability margin.
Excess gas can increase carrier velocity, recoil impulse, fouling and gas exposure at the shooter. Insufficient gas can cause short-stroking, failures to feed and failures to lock back.
Why CM Uses Pistol-Length Gas
Chattahoochee Munitions uses pistol-length gas on its 7.5-, 10.5- and 16-inch CM15 300 Blackout configurations. A longer barrel does not automatically justify moving the gas port farther forward.
Subsonic ammunition provides less operating energy than typical supersonic rifle ammunition. Placing the gas port closer to the chamber allows the system to access pressure earlier in the firing cycle. Moving the port to a carbine- or rifle-length location would reduce the operating pressure available from many subsonic loads.
The 5-inch CM15 is the exception because it cannot physically accommodate conventional pistol gas. Its micro-length system places the gas port closer to the chamber and establishes the operating window required by the extremely short barrel.
Adjust the Gas Before Adding Buffer Mass
Many shooters respond to an overgassed AR-15 by installing a heavier buffer or stronger action spring. Those changes can slow the carrier, but they do not address the root cause: too much gas entering the operating system.
The adjustable gas block is the primary tuning control. It regulates the amount of gas sent through the gas tube and carrier key. The adjustable buffer is a secondary control that refines the mass the available gas must move.
CM’s objective is reliable operation with the lightest practical buffer and the minimum necessary gas. If the firearm cycles reliably with a light buffer and a properly restricted gas setting, the system is not relying on unnecessary pressure to overcome excessive reciprocating mass.
For CM’s complete tuning procedure—including single-round testing, bolt-lockback verification and the desired 3:00–4:30 ejection range—read the 300 Blackout Gas System Guide.
Complete CM15 Firearms Are Test-Fired and Verified
Every complete Chattahoochee Munitions semi-automatic firearm is assembled, test-fired and verified for proper operation before shipment. Because CM controls the upper, lower, bolt-carrier group, gas components, receiver extension, action spring and adjustable buffer, the firearm can receive a functional baseline tune as a complete operating system.
Gas-block alignment, barrel gas-port sizing and baseline tuning are addressed during the manufacturing process. Common problems such as a misaligned gas block or an undersized barrel gas port are identified and overcome before the complete firearm leaves CM.
Subsequent adjustment serves a different purpose. Ammunition pressure and suppressor backpressure vary. Fine-tuning allows the owner to optimize an already verified firearm for the particular load and suppressor being used.
Why Standalone CM15 Uppers Require Final Tuning
Standalone CM15 upper receiver assemblies are not test-fired or represented as plug-and-play tuned. Without the customer’s lower receiver, CM cannot know the final buffer weight, action spring, receiver extension, magazine, ammunition or suppressor configuration.
CM manufactures each upper with the correct barrel, gas-system length, adjustable gas block, gas tube and bolt-carrier architecture. Final tuning must occur after the upper is installed on the lower receiver with which it will actually be used.

How Suppression Changes a Gas-Operated Firearm
In a direct-impingement AR-15, propellant gas enters the barrel gas port, travels through the gas block and gas tube, and reaches the bolt carrier through the carrier key. This gas supplies the energy that cycles the action.
An enclosed suppressor restricts how quickly gas can leave the muzzle. Pressure remains in the suppressor, bore and chamber area for a longer period. The operating system then experiences pressure through two related paths:
- Gas delivered through the gas port, gas tube and carrier key
- Suppressor backpressure retained in the bore and chamber as the action begins to unlock
This combined pressure can increase carrier speed significantly. The suppressor is therefore part of the operating system—not merely an accessory added after the firearm has been configured.
Why CM Prefers an Enclosed Suppressor for Subsonic 300 Blackout
An enclosed suppressor generally retains more gas and creates more backpressure than a vented or flow-through design. With low-pressure subsonic ammunition, that additional backpressure can provide useful energy to cycle the CM15.
A flow-through suppressor is designed to send gas forward and reduce the pressure returned through a semi-automatic action. That can be beneficial for supersonic-focused cartridges where excess pressure and shooter gas exposure are primary concerns.
For subsonic 300 Blackout, the same low-backpressure characteristic can be counterintuitive. The suppressor removes pressure that the firearm may need for reliable cycling. A flow-through suppressor may function with a particular firearm and load, but an enclosed suppressor is generally the more natural choice when subsonic reliability and sound reduction are the priorities.
Supersonic Ammunition with an Enclosed Suppressor
The same enclosed suppressor that provides useful backpressure with subsonic ammunition can produce excessive pressure with supersonic ammunition. Supersonic loads already provide more operating energy, and the enclosed suppressor retains additional gas.
In this configuration, the adjustable gas block may need to be closed most of the way because suppressor backpressure is performing much of the work required to cycle the carrier.
The proper response is to reduce gas at the adjustable gas block before adding buffer mass as a countermeasure. More gas does not automatically create greater reliability. The objective is sufficient operating energy without unnecessary carrier velocity.
Steel, Titanium and Suppressor Tone
Suppressor material is only one element of performance, but CM’s experience is that steel suppressors typically provide the strongest overall suppression and a lower perceived tone. Steel also provides durability and favorable heat tolerance, although it weighs more than titanium.
Titanium can reduce the weight attached to the muzzle, which may be valuable on a firearm carried for extended periods. Internal volume, baffle geometry, bore clearance and mounting configuration still influence suppression, tone and backpressure. Material alone does not determine performance.
For a subsonic-focused 300 Blackout firearm, CM generally prioritizes sound reduction, lower tone and useful backpressure over the lowest possible suppressor weight.
CM15 SD Suppressor-Under-Handguard Configurations
Within the CM line, the SD designation identifies a firearm in which the suppressor extends inside or beneath the handguard. The term does not merely indicate that the firearm has a threaded muzzle or can accept a suppressor.
These SD configurations are also commonly described as having a tucked or shrouded suppressor. The extended handguard provides additional gripping and accessory space while allowing part of the suppressor to occupy the area forward of the barrel shoulder.
Suppressor diameter, mounting method, handguard clearance and heat management must be considered when selecting a suppressor for an SD firearm. The handguard does not make the suppressor integral to the firearm, and the suppressor remains a separate regulated component.

A conventionally configured CM15 with a forward-mounted suppressor remains suppressor-ready, but it is not an SD firearm under CM’s product terminology.
CM7S Bolt-Action 300 Blackout
The CM7S 300 Blackout family removes the gas-cycling requirements of a semi-automatic platform. Because the shooter manually operates the action, ammunition does not have to generate enough gas pressure to move a carrier, compress a spring and feed the next cartridge.
Every CM7S 300 BLK barrel uses a 1:5 twist. The verified CM7S barrel specification includes a Mos-Tek 416R stainless-steel barrel, 5R rifling, a shouldered crown, 5/8×24 muzzle threads, the Remage barrel system and E100 Blackout Cerakote.
The bolt-action platform is particularly well suited to shooters who prioritize heavy subsonic projectiles, reduced action noise and flexibility among different loads. Ammunition changes can alter point of impact, trajectory and terminal behavior, but they do not create a semi-automatic cycling requirement.
Chassis-based CM7S configurations emphasize compact suppressed performance. WOOX-equipped configurations naturally serve hunting use by pairing the CM-manufactured firearm with walnut furniture and an adjustable field-oriented stock system. Chattahoochee Munitions—not WOOX—is the manufacturer of the complete firearm.
Ammunition and Projectile Selection
Heavy bullet weight alone does not guarantee suitable subsonic performance. A match projectile may provide excellent accuracy without expanding at subsonic impact velocity. A hollow-point profile also does not automatically mean the projectile was engineered to expand at those lower velocities.
Shooters should select ammunition according to its intended use, including target practice, suppressed training, hunting or defensive application. Black Butterfly Ammunition offers 300 AAC Blackout ammunition across subsonic and supersonic applications.
CM does not plan to manufacture common commercial 300 BLK ammunition. Chattahoochee Munitions reserves its ammunition production for niche, rare and underserved cartridges while concentrating Sector 300 on purpose-manufactured firearms, upper receiver assemblies, barreled actions and vetted magazines.
CM-Vetted Magazines
Magazine selection is part of the complete firearm system. CM tests the magazines offered for its firearms instead of assuming that any magazine matching a general pattern will feed the stated cartridge reliably.
The CM15 300 Blackout magazine is a CM-vetted ETS 30-round magazine for the semi-automatic platform. Its carbon-smoke body also assists with visual ammunition identification.
The CM7S 300 Blackout bolt-action magazine is a CM-vetted 10-round Magpul AICS-pattern magazine. Its offset feed-lip geometry supports bolt-face engagement with the .223-based cartridge geometry used by 300 BLK.
300 Blackout and 5.56 Safety
300 Blackout and 5.56 NATO use similar AR-15 magazine and bolt geometry, but their ammunition is not interchangeable. A 300 BLK cartridge can potentially enter a 5.56 chamber far enough to create a bore obstruction. Attempting to fire it can cause catastrophic firearm failure, serious injury or death.
Use dedicated, clearly marked magazines whenever possible. Store the ammunition separately, confirm the firearm’s chambering and inspect the cartridge headstamp before loading. Magazine color and markings can support identification, but they do not replace deliberate ammunition-management practices.
