458 SOCOM Suppressor Guide: Enclosed Suppressors and the PLACID OTB

A 458 SOCOM suppressor needs a .458-caliber bore, and with subsonic ammunition it should be an enclosed suppressor. Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures the PLACID OTB, an all-titanium over-the-barrel suppressor for the 12.5-inch CM7S 458 SOCOM bolt action, along with the 650 gr subsonic ammunition and the CM7S and CM10 firearms it is matched to. This guide covers caliber, suppressor type, barrel length, and how each platform affects what you hear.

What Makes a Suppressed 458 SOCOM Quiet

Three things decide how quiet a suppressed firearm is: the ammunition, the action, and the suppressor.

  • Subsonic ammunition: A bullet faster than sound makes a crack all the way downrange that no suppressor can remove. The Chattahoochee Munitions 650 gr load averages about 1,010 fps from a 12.5-inch barrel, below the speed of sound even at 0°F. See 458 SOCOM subsonic.
  • The action: A bolt action does not cycle when it fires, so it adds no action noise. A semi-automatic cycles from gas, which adds noise at the shooter.
  • The suppressor: An enclosed suppressor rated for .458 caliber handles the muzzle blast. With subsonic ammunition, Chattahoochee Munitions recommends an enclosed suppressor on both the CM7S and the CM10.

458 SOCOM Suppressor Caliber Rating

A 458 SOCOM suppressor must be rated for .458 caliber or larger. A .375 or .30-caliber suppressor will not pass a .458 bullet. Many .45-caliber pistol suppressors are not rated for rifle pressure, so check the manufacturer’s rating for 458 SOCOM before mounting one.

Enclosed vs Flow-Through 458 SOCOM Suppressor

Chattahoochee Munitions sells 458 SOCOM ammunition only as heavy subsonic loads, and with subsonic ammunition an enclosed suppressor is recommended on both platforms.

  • CM7S bolt action: Always enclosed. The bolt does not cycle, so nothing in the action depends on gas pressure.
  • CM10 semi-auto: Enclosed with subsonic ammunition. The CM10’s Superlative Arms adjustable gas block and Odin Works adjustable AR10 buffer let the rifle be tuned to cycle reliably with the suppressor installed.

PLACID OTB: A 458 SOCOM Suppressor Over the Barrel

The PLACID OTB is an all-titanium suppressor designed around the 12.5-inch CM7S. Most of the suppressor surrounds the unported, full-length barrel instead of extending past the muzzle, so the suppressed firearm stays short and balanced.

  • Material: Titanium
  • Length: 18.25 inches
  • Diameter: 1.5 inches
  • Weight: 23.6 oz
  • Host: 12.5-inch CM7S bolt action, unported barrel
  • Complete firearm: 31.00 to 38.625 inches overall and 7 lb 13.6 oz with the suppressor installed

The CM7S 458 SOCOM with PLACID OTB is a complete factory SBR offered in nine Cerakote finishes. A 458 SOCOM barreled action with PLACID OTB is also available.

Barrel Length for a 458 SOCOM Suppressor Host

A 12.5-inch barrel suits suppressed 458 SOCOM subsonic. Subsonic loads reach their velocity early in the barrel, so a shorter barrel gives up little and keeps the suppressed firearm compact. Chattahoochee Munitions offers both the CM7S and the CM10 with 12.5-inch and 16-inch barrels; a 16-inch barrel avoids SBR registration but makes a longer suppressed rifle. Compare them in 458 SOCOM barrel length.

Why 458 SOCOM XL Suits Suppressed Shooting

Below the speed of sound, a heavier bullet is the way to carry more energy. Standard 458 SOCOM is limited to 2.260 inches overall to fit an AR15, which forces heavy bullets deep into the case. 458 SOCOM XL loads the 2.035-inch, 650 gr projectile to 2.802 inches for the CM7S and 2.790 inches for the CM10, reclaiming case capacity. The result is about 1,473 ft-lb at the muzzle from a subsonic load. Full figures are in 458 SOCOM ballistics.

NFA Requirements

Suppressors and short-barreled rifles are regulated under the National Firearms Act. The 12.5-inch CM7S with PLACID OTB is an SBR with a suppressor, so both items require NFA approval. Each transfer needs an approved ATF Form 4. See NFA Firearms for the current process.

458 SOCOM Suppressor FAQ

Who makes a suppressor for the 458 SOCOM bolt action?

Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures the PLACID OTB, an all-titanium over-the-barrel suppressor for its 12.5-inch CM7S 458 SOCOM bolt action, sold as a complete suppressed SBR.

What caliber 458 SOCOM suppressor do I need?

A suppressor rated for .458 caliber or larger, and rated for 458 SOCOM rifle pressure.

Should a 458 SOCOM suppressor be enclosed or flow-through?

With subsonic ammunition, enclosed, on both the CM7S bolt action and the CM10 semi-auto.

Is 458 SOCOM quiet with a suppressor?

With subsonic ammunition, yes. The bullet stays below the speed of sound, so the suppressor only has to handle the muzzle blast. A bolt action also adds no action noise.

Is a suppressed 458 SOCOM bolt action quieter than a semi-auto?

At the shooter, yes. The bolt action does not cycle when it fires, while a semi-automatic cycles from gas.

What barrel length is best for a suppressed 458 SOCOM?

12.5 inches. Subsonic loads reach their velocity in a short barrel, and the shorter barrel keeps the suppressed firearm compact.

Does a suppressor need NFA approval?

Yes. Suppressors are regulated under the National Firearms Act, as are rifles with barrels under 16 inches.
