A 458 SOCOM bolt action and a 458 SOCOM semi-auto fire the same .458 bore, but they differ in how they feed, how they cycle, and which ammunition they use. Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures both: the CM7S, a short-action bolt action, and the CM10, a large-frame AR10-pattern semi-automatic. Both are chambered in 458 SOCOM and configured for 458 SOCOM XL, the 650 gr subsonic load that is too long for an AR15. This 458 SOCOM bolt action vs semi auto comparison covers suppressed, short-barrel use.

458 SOCOM Bolt Action vs Semi Auto: Why Neither Is an AR15
Most 458 SOCOM rifles are AR15s, which limit the cartridge to 2.260 inches overall. Chattahoochee Munitions loads its 2.035-inch, 650 gr projectile longer than that as 458 SOCOM XL, which seats the projectile less deeply and reclaims case capacity for powder. A round that long needs a short action or the AR10 platform, which is why Chattahoochee Munitions makes 458 SOCOM only as the CM7S and the CM10. Neither an AR15 nor a mini-action bolt gun accepts it.
Both platforms feed from a modified MDT metal AICS-pattern 458 SOCOM magazine configured for XL length. It is not suitable for shorter, standard 458 SOCOM loads.
The 458 SOCOM Bolt Action: CM7S
The CM7S is a Remington 700-footprint short action with three locking lugs, a 60-degree bolt throw, and a TriggerTech Remington 700 Primary trigger in the CM7 billet aluminum chassis. Barrels are made by Mos-Tek from 416R stainless steel with 5R rifling and a 1:10 twist.
A bolt action does not cycle when it fires. The shooter opens the bolt after the shot, so the action adds no noise and no gas comes back toward the shooter. That makes the CM7S a natural host for suppressed subsonic shooting, and the 12.5-inch CM7S with PLACID OTB pairs it with an over-the-barrel suppressor that keeps the complete firearm short.
- CM7S 458 SOCOM 12.5-inch bolt action pistol or SBR
- CM7S 458 SOCOM 16-inch bolt action rifle
- CM7S 458 SOCOM barreled action
The 458 SOCOM Semi Auto: CM10
The CM10 is a large-frame AR10-pattern rifle with billet 7075-T6 aluminum receivers. The lower is machined for the AICS-pattern magazine, which feeds from the center. A pistol-length gas system with a Superlative Arms adjustable gas block and an Odin Works adjustable AR10 buffer let the rifle be tuned to run the heavy subsonic load suppressed. The trigger is a TriggerTech Duty at 3.5 lb, in single-stage straight, single-stage curved, or two-stage straight.
The CM10 gives fast follow-up shots, which matters on running hogs or multiple targets. It cycles from gas, so it makes more noise at the shooter than a bolt action even when suppressed.
458 SOCOM Bolt Action vs Semi Auto Ammunition
Chattahoochee Munitions loads the 650 gr Maker REX two ways, and the two are not interchangeable.
- Bolt action: The 458 SOCOM subsonic ammo for bolt action is 2.802 inches overall and averages about 1,010 fps from a 12.5-inch CM7S barrel. It is not intended for the CM10.
- Semi-auto: The 458 SOCOM semi-auto ammo is 2.790 inches overall with a propellant configuration that cycles the CM10, and averages about 1,012 fps from a 12.5-inch CM10 barrel.
Velocity, energy, and drop for the 650 gr load are in 458 SOCOM ballistics.
458 SOCOM Bolt Action vs Semi Auto: Which Should You Choose?
The 458 SOCOM bolt action vs semi auto choice comes down to how you hunt.
- Choose the CM7S bolt action for suppressed hunting from a stand or blind, deliberate shots at known distances, and a short suppressed package with the PLACID OTB.
- Choose the CM10 semi-auto for fast follow-up shots on hogs, a familiar AR-style manual of arms, and adjustable gas for running suppressed.
With subsonic ammunition, use an enclosed suppressor on either platform. The 458 SOCOM suppressor guide covers the choice. See every configuration on Terminal 458.
458 SOCOM Bolt Action vs Semi Auto FAQ
Who makes a 458 SOCOM bolt action rifle?
Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures the CM7S 458 SOCOM bolt action as a 12.5-inch pistol or SBR, a 16-inch rifle, a 12.5-inch SBR with the PLACID OTB suppressor, and as barreled actions, all configured for 458 SOCOM XL.
Is there a 458 SOCOM AR10?
Yes. Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures the CM10, a large-frame AR10-pattern semi-automatic in 458 SOCOM, configured for 458 SOCOM XL, with 12.5-inch and 16-inch barrels.
Why does the CM10 use an AR10 frame for 458 SOCOM?
The 650 gr XL load is 2.790 inches overall, too long for an AR15 magazine. The AR10-size lower accepts the longer AICS-pattern magazine.
In 458 SOCOM bolt action vs semi auto, can I use the same ammunition in both?
No. The bolt action load (2.802 inches) is not intended for the CM10. Use the semi-auto load (2.790 inches) in the CM10.
Is a suppressed 458 SOCOM bolt action quieter than a semi-auto?
At the shooter, yes. A bolt action does not cycle when it fires, so it adds no action noise and no gas comes back from the action.
Do the CM7S and CM10 use the same magazine?
Both use a modified MDT metal AICS-pattern magazine configured for 458 SOCOM XL. It is not suitable for shorter, standard 458 SOCOM loads.
Which barrel lengths are available?
The CM7S and the CM10 are both offered with 12.5-inch and 16-inch barrels, all with a 1:10 twist. See 458 SOCOM barrel length and 458 SOCOM twist rate.
What suppressor should I use on each?
With subsonic ammunition, use an enclosed suppressor on both the CM7S and the CM10.
