308 bolt action vs semi auto is a choice between a manually operated action and a gas-operated one. A bolt action is shorter for its barrel length, adds no action noise when suppressed, and fires subsonic ammunition without needing gas to cycle. A semi-automatic AR10 gives fast follow-up shots and a familiar AR control layout, but it needs the gas from supersonic ammunition, or a purpose-designed subsonic configuration, to run. Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures both in 308 Winchester: the CM7S bolt action in 12.5 and 16 inches and the CM10 AR10 in 12.5, 16 and 18 inches, plus the CM10-SD subsonic AR10.

How Each 308 Action Works
The CM7S is a Remington 700 footprint short action. The shooter lifts the bolt, pulls it back to eject the case, pushes it forward to chamber the next round and closes it. Nothing moves until the shooter moves it, so ammunition pressure and suppressor back pressure have no effect on how the action operates.
The CM10 is a large-frame AR10 pattern semi-automatic. Gas tapped from the barrel drives the bolt carrier back to extract, eject and chamber the next round. Chattahoochee Munitions uses an adjustable gas block and an adjustable buffer so the owner can tune the system to the ammunition and suppressor. The trade-off is that the action depends on the gas each load produces.
308 Bolt Action vs Semi Auto for Subsonic Ammunition
Subsonic is where the difference matters most. Chattahoochee Munitions’ 300 gr subsonic load produces far less gas than supersonic 308. A bolt action does not care: the 12.5-inch 1:5 CM7S fires it with or without a suppressor and adds no action noise when suppressed. A standard AR10, including CM’s own 1:10 CM10 rifles, will not cycle it. The CM10-SD is the exception. It combines a 12.5-inch 1:5 barrel with an enclosed suppressor, which supplies the extra back pressure the load needs to cycle the action. Do not fire supersonic ammunition through the CM10-SD. See 308 Winchester subsonic.
308 Bolt Action vs Semi Auto With a Suppressor
- CM7S bolt action: use an enclosed suppressor. The action stays closed during the shot, so the only sounds are the muzzle and the impact.
- CM10 with supersonic ammunition: use a flow-through suppressor, which limits the extra gas pushed back into the action.
- CM10-SD with subsonic ammunition: use an enclosed suppressor; the firearm needs it to cycle.
The reasoning is in the 308 suppressor guide.
308 Bolt Action vs Semi Auto Accuracy
Both platforms can be accurate. A bolt action locks the cartridge in a rigid action with no moving parts during the shot, which is one reason precision shooters favor it. CM7S barrels are Mos-Tek 416R stainless with 5R rifling and E100 Blackout Cerakote, attached with a Remage barrel nut. The CM10 uses a free-float handguard, and its 18-inch configurations are aimed at longer-range work.
308 Bolt Action vs Semi Auto Size and Handling
A bolt action has no buffer tube, so with the CM7S collapsing chassis it stores shorter than an AR10 with the same barrel length. The CM10 keeps the familiar AR controls, adjustable stock and rail space. Both are offered as short-barreled configurations: the 12.5-inch CM7S and CM10 ship as SBRs or pistols. NFA requirements have changed recently; check current ATF guidance and your state law before buying.
308 Bolt Action vs Semi Auto: Which Should You Choose?
- Choose a CM7S bolt action for suppressed subsonic shooting, hunting from a stand or blind, precision work and the shortest overall package.
- Choose a CM10 for fast follow-up shots with supersonic 308 Winchester or 7.62×51 NATO, hog control and marksman-style shooting.
- Choose the CM10-SD if you want semi-automatic subsonic and will always run it with an enclosed suppressor.

308 Bolt Action vs Semi Auto FAQ
Is a bolt action 308 more accurate than a semi auto?
A bolt action has fewer moving parts during the shot, which helps consistency, but a quality AR10 can be very accurate too. Ammunition and the shooter matter more than the action type for most users.
Can a semi auto 308 shoot subsonic?
Not reliably in a standard AR10. The CM10-SD is designed to cycle CM’s 300 gr subsonic load with an enclosed suppressor attached.
Is a bolt action 308 quieter with a suppressor?
The bolt action adds no action noise during the shot, so with subsonic ammunition and an enclosed suppressor the remaining sounds are the muzzle and the impact.
Do the CM7S and CM10 use the same magazines?
No. The CM7S uses a short-action AICS pattern magazine and the CM10 uses an LR/SR pattern magazine.
Which is better for hunting, bolt action or semi auto 308?
Either works. A bolt action suits suppressed and stand hunting; a semi-auto suits hogs and situations that call for quick follow-up shots.
What suppressor should I use on each?
Enclosed on the CM7S and the CM10-SD; flow-through on a CM10 firing supersonic ammunition.
Who makes a 308 bolt action and semi auto?
Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures both: the CM7S 308 bolt action in 12.5-inch (1:5) and 16-inch (1:8) configurations, and the CM10 308 AR10 in 12.5, 16 and 18 inches plus the CM10-SD 12.5-inch subsonic AR10.
