CM7S 308 Compact Hunting Rifle

The CM7S 308 Compact Hunting Rifle combines a 12.5-inch Mos-Tek barrel, fast 1:5 twist and CM’s three-lug bolt action with an adjustable American walnut chassis produced in collaboration with WOOX. It is a registered short-barreled rifle designed around compact handling, suppressed operation and heavy subsonic 308 Winchester ammunition.

The manually operated CM7S action does not rely on ammunition pressure or suppressor backpressure to cycle. This allows the rifle to fire compatible subsonic ammunition with or without a suppressor while retaining the closed-action characteristics of a bolt-action platform.

At 7 pounds 12 ounces, the rifle combines a manageable field profile with the adjustment, detachable-magazine compatibility and accessory interfaces of a modern chassis system. Its overall length adjusts from 31.75 to 32.5 inches, while length of pull adjusts from 13.75 to 14.75 inches.

Mos-Tek 12.5-Inch 1:5 Twist Barrel

The barrel is produced through CM’s collaboration with Mos-Tek. It is machined from 416R stainless steel, uses 5R rifling and receives E100 Blackout Cerakote for external protection.

The 1:5 twist is selected for long, heavy subsonic projectiles. CM’s 300-grain Maker REX measures 2.06 inches long and travels at approximately 1,005 feet per second from this barrel configuration. Its combination of extreme length and subsonic velocity requires substantially more rotational speed than a conventional 1:8 or 1:10 twist barrel can provide.

The shouldered crown protects the muzzle, while 5/8×24 threads accept compatible direct-thread suppressors and suppressor mounts. The barrel installs through a Remage barrel nut and CM7S action interface.

CM7S Three-Lug Bolt Action

The CM7S action uses the established Remington 700 footprint with a three-lug bolt and 60-degree throw. The shorter bolt rotation reduces handle travel and provides additional clearance around the optic during operation.

A one-piece .718-inch bolt body, M16-style extractor and integrated .300-inch recoil lug provide the mechanical foundation of the 308 Compact Hunting Rifle. Wire EDM-cut raceways establish uniform tolerances, while the oversized bolt knob and spiral-fluted bolt support smooth manual operation.

The action and bolt receive a full PVD coating for corrosion resistance and reduced operating friction. A pinned 20-MOA Picatinny rail provides a stable optic interface, and the large ejection port offers clear access to the chamber and action.

CM7S Action Features

  • Remington 700 footprint
  • Three-lug action with a 60-degree bolt throw

TriggerTech Remington 700 Primary Trigger

The CM7S uses a TriggerTech Remington 700 Primary trigger, available with a flat or curved trigger bow. TriggerTech’s Frictionless Release Technology provides a zero-creep break with short overtravel and consistent operation.

Pull weight is externally adjustable from 1.5 to 4 pounds in one-ounce increments. Hardened 440C stainless steel internal components provide corrosion resistance and extended service life. Current flat triggers do not use the removable trigger shoes shown in some earlier CM photographs.

WOOX Walnut Chassis System

The walnut chassis is produced through CM’s collaboration with WOOX. It combines the appearance and feel of American walnut with an aluminum structural core, adjustable stock and detachable AICS-pattern magazine system.

The Exactus stock includes an adjustable cheek riser and an adjustable buttpad for both height and length of pull. A bottom Picatinny rail and QD sling mount support common hunting and field equipment.

The Furiosa walnut forend provides M-LOK mounting surfaces at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions. These interfaces support compatible bipods, sling mounts and other field accessories without replacing the walnut forend.

Exactus Stock Features

  • American walnut construction
  • Adjustable cheek riser
  • Adjustable buttpad height
  • Adjustable length of pull
  • Bottom Picatinny rail
  • QD sling mount

Furiosa Forend Features

  • American walnut construction

MDT CORE Bottom Metal and AICS Magazine

The rifle uses MDT CORE bottom metal in the M5 pattern. It provides the detachable-magazine interface between the CM7S action and the short-action AICS magazine system.

One 5-round Magpul 7.62 AICS magazine is included with the 308 Compact Hunting Rifle. The CM7S can use compatible polymer or metal short-action AICS magazines.

Additional magazines are available through the CM 308 bolt-action magazine page.

CM 300-Grain Subsonic Ammunition

CM’s 308 subsonic ammunition uses a 300-grain Maker REX projectile loaded in new Starline 308 Winchester brass. From CM’s 12.5-inch 1:5 twist barrel, the load averages approximately 1,005 feet per second.

The manually operated action does not depend on gas pressure for cycling. Unlike a semi-automatic platform, the 308 Compact Hunting Rifle can fire compatible subsonic ammunition with or without a suppressor.

CM’s 300-grain ammunition should not be fired through a conventional 1:8 or 1:10 twist barrel. A slower twist can allow the projectile to yaw or tumble, degrading accuracy and creating the possibility of a suppressor baffle or end-cap strike.

Read the 308 Winchester Subsonic Guide for the complete explanation of projectile length, velocity and stability.

Suppressing the 308 Compact Hunting Rifle

A bolt action does not use propellant gas to cycle, allowing the rifle to operate with or without a suppressor. CM generally recommends an enclosed suppressor because backpressure does not have to be balanced against semi-automatic bolt speed or receiver gas.

Subsonic ammunition removes the supersonic flight crack, while the suppressor reduces the muzzle report. The firearm is not silent; remaining sound includes the action, escaping gas and projectile impact.

The suppressor must be rated for 308 Winchester, the 12.5-inch barrel and the intended firing schedule. Confirm mounting compatibility, suppressor-to-bore alignment and manufacturer restrictions before firing.

Read the 308 Suppressor Guide for CM’s platform-specific recommendations.

308 Compact Hunting Rifle FAQ

Is this firearm an SBR?

Yes. This product has a 12.5-inch barrel and shoulder stock, making it an NFA-regulated short-barreled rifle. It will ship to the customer’s selected local FFL/SOT for completion of the applicable Form 4 transfer.

Why does this rifle use a 1:5 twist?

The 1:5 twist stabilizes long, heavy subsonic projectiles such as CM’s 300-grain Maker REX. Conventional 1:8 and 1:10 twist barrels are too slow to stabilize that projectile reliably at subsonic velocity.

Is a suppressor included?

No. A suppressor and optic may appear in product photographs but are not included unless specifically identified as part of the selected product option. The rifle uses 5/8×24 muzzle threads for compatible suppressor mounts and direct-thread suppressors.

Is the walnut furniture a traditional rifle stock?

No. The WOOX system combines American walnut furniture with an aluminum structural core, adjustable stock and detachable AICS-pattern magazine system. It provides the appearance and feel of walnut with modern chassis adjustment and accessory mounting.

What magazine does the rifle use?

The rifle uses short-action AICS-pattern magazines and includes one 5-round Magpul 7.62 AICS magazine. Compatible polymer or metal AICS magazines may also be used.
