6mm ARC for coyotes and hogs: it carries more energy and drifts less in wind than 223 Remington for coyotes at distance, and its 103 to 108 gr bullets penetrate better on hogs, from a rifle no bigger than an AR15. Hornady’s 103 gr ELD-X leaves a 24-inch test barrel with 1,793 ft-lb, and from a 16-inch barrel Chattahoochee Munitions calculates about 1,136 ft-lb at 200 yards. Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures 6mm ARC predator and hog rifles on the CM15 AR15 in 16 and 18-inch configurations and the CM7S bolt action in 18 and 12.5-inch configurations, every barrel 1:7 twist and threaded 5/8×24 for a suppressor. This guide covers bullets, wind, energy and shot placement when you choose 6mm ARC for coyotes and hogs.
6mm ARC for Coyotes
Coyotes are small but tough, and shots often come across open fields with wind. That is where 6mm ARC for coyotes helps: the high-BC 6 mm bullets drift about 17.5 inches at 500 yards in a 10 mph crosswind (108 gr ELD Match, calculated from Hornady’s published 24-inch figures), against about 25 inches for a 75 gr 223 match bullet.
- For fur: a fast-expanding bullet that stays inside the animal limits pelt damage. Heavy hunting bullets can exit and tear a large hole. Many fur hunters accept the tradeoff of lighter bullets, which spin faster than they need to in a 1:7 twist; check their accuracy in your rifle first. See 6mm ARC twist rate.
- For pest control: the 103 gr ELD-X or 108 gr ELD Match flies flat and bucks wind at long range, and pelt damage does not matter.
- Zero: a 200-yard zero keeps a coyote’s chest in reach without holdover to about 250 yards from 16 to 18 inches.
6mm ARC for Hogs
Feral hogs have thick hide and, on mature boars, a tough shoulder shield of cartilage. Penetration matters more than speed when you pick 6mm ARC for coyotes and hogs. A 103 to 108 gr bullet that holds together gives 6mm ARC for hogs an edge over light 223 bullets.
| 103 gr ELD-X from | Muzzle energy | 100 yd | 200 yd |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 inches (Hornady published) | 1,793 ft-lb | 1,573 ft-lb | 1,375 ft-lb |
| 18-inch CM15 or CM7S (calculated) | 1,570 ft-lb | 1,372 ft-lb | 1,194 ft-lb |
| 16-inch CM15 (calculated) | 1,499 ft-lb | 1,308 ft-lb | 1,136 ft-lb |
| 12.5-inch CM7S (calculated) | 1,378 ft-lb | 1,200 ft-lb | 1,040 ft-lb |
Calculated rows use estimated muzzle velocities of 30 fps per inch below 24 inches. Aim behind the ear or low on the shoulder, and pass on big boars at angles that put the shield and heavy bone in the way. For very large hogs at close range, a heavier cartridge gives more margin: see 375 Raptor hunting or 458 SOCOM hunting.
The USDA’s feral swine program explains why hog control matters and how states handle it. Night hunting, thermal optics and suppressor use for hogs are governed by state law; check your state’s rules for 6mm ARC for Coyotes and Hogs.
Semi Auto or Bolt Action: 6mm ARC for Coyotes and Hogs
- CM15 AR15: fast follow-up shots for a sounder of hogs or a pair of coyotes. The 6mm ARC coyote rifle and 6mm ARC predator hunting rifle are 18-inch, 6 lb 12 oz, with rifle-length gas; the 16-inch 6mm ARC AR rifle weighs 6 lb 6 oz.
- CM7S bolt action: one well-placed shot, no action noise when suppressed and an adjustable 1.5 to 4.0 lb TriggerTech Remington 700 Primary trigger. The 18-inch 6mm ARC predator rifle weighs 7 lb 6 oz; the 12.5-inch 6mm ARC pistol or SBR suits vehicles and blinds.

Suppressing 6mm ARC for Coyotes and Hogs
A suppressor cuts muzzle blast for the shooter, a dog and nearby houses, but 6mm ARC is supersonic, so the bullet’s crack remains. Chattahoochee Munitions recommends a flow-through suppressor on the gas-operated CM15 and an enclosed suppressor on the CM7S bolt action. See 6mm ARC suppressor. CM7S barrels are manufactured in collaboration with Mos-Tek.
For other predator cartridges, see predator hunting cartridges, 22 ARC for coyotes and hogs, 22-250 for coyotes and Predator Plains. Every 6mm ARC predator rifle is at Overwatch 6.

6mm ARC for Coyotes and Hogs FAQ
Is 6mm ARC good for coyotes?
Yes. It shoots flat, carries energy to long range and drifts less in wind than 223 match loads. Use a fast-expanding bullet if you want to save pelts.
Is 6mm ARC good for hogs?
Yes, with a 103 to 108 gr bullet that holds together and good shot placement behind the ear or low on the shoulder.
Is 6mm ARC too much for coyotes?
Heavy hunting bullets can exit and damage pelts. For fur, choose a fast-expanding bullet; for pest control, any accurate load works.
Which 6mm ARC load should I use for hogs?
A hunting bullet such as the 103 gr ELD-X Precision Hunter, which is designed to expand and hold together. Confirm it groups in your rifle.
Is 6mm ARC better than 223 for hogs?
Its heavier bullets give more energy and penetration: about 1,375 ft-lb at 200 yards for the 103 gr ELD-X (24-inch, published) against about 916 ft-lb for a 75 gr 223 match load. See 6mm ARC vs 223.
Should I hunt hogs at night with a 6mm ARC?
Many hunters do, with thermal or night vision optics and a suppressor, where state law allows. Rules on night hunting and suppressors vary by state.
Can I use a 12.5-inch rifle with 6mm ARC for coyotes and hogs?
Yes. The calculated 103 gr ELD-X keeps about 1,200 ft-lb at 100 yards from the 12.5-inch CM7S, and the short barrel stays handy with a suppressor.
Who makes a 6mm ARC predator rifle?
Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures 6mm ARC predator rifles: the CM15 AR15 in 16 and 18-inch configurations and the CM7S bolt action in 18 and 12.5-inch configurations, all 1:7 twist with 5/8×24 threads.
