Is 6mm ARC for deer a sound choice? Yes, with an expanding hunting bullet, honest range limits and good shot placement, where your state allows a .243-caliber centerfire. Hornady’s 103 gr ELD-X Precision Hunter leaves a 24-inch test barrel at 2,800 fps with 1,793 ft-lb, and from the 16 and 18-inch barrels Chattahoochee Munitions uses it still carries about 1,000 ft-lb near 300 yards by CM’s calculation. Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures 6mm ARC deer rifles on two platforms: the CM7S bolt action in 18 and 12.5-inch configurations and the CM15 AR15 in 16 and 18-inch configurations.
Why 6mm ARC for Deer Works
The 6mm ARC fires the same .243-inch bullet diameter that hunters have used on whitetail for decades in 243 Winchester, at lower velocity and with less recoil. Its long 103 to 108 gr bullets hold velocity well, so energy falls off slowly with distance. Low recoil also lets you see the hit and follow up fast, which matters more on deer than a few extra foot-pounds.
6mm ARC Energy for Deer by Barrel Length
Many hunters use about 1,000 ft-lb as a working guideline for deer-sized game. It is a rule of thumb, not a law of physics: bullet construction and shot placement matter more. The 24-inch row is Hornady’s published data; the CM barrel rows are Chattahoochee Munitions calculations with estimated muzzle velocities (30 fps per inch below 24 inches) and a 200-yard zero.
| 103 gr ELD-X from | Muzzle | 100 yd | 200 yd | 300 yd |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24 inches (published) | 2,800 fps / 1,793 ft-lb | 1,573 ft-lb | 1,375 ft-lb | 1,197 ft-lb |
| 18-inch CM7S or CM15 | 2,620 fps / 1,570 ft-lb | 1,372 ft-lb | 1,194 ft-lb | 1,035 ft-lb |
| 16-inch CM15 | 2,560 fps / 1,499 ft-lb | 1,308 ft-lb | 1,136 ft-lb | 983 ft-lb |
| 12.5-inch CM7S | 2,455 fps / 1,378 ft-lb | 1,200 ft-lb | 1,040 ft-lb | 897 ft-lb |
Read as a guide: about 300 yards from 18 inches, about 275 from 16 inches and about 225 from the 12.5-inch CM7S, for a skilled shooter in good conditions. Most deer are shot well inside those distances. More figures are in 6mm ARC ballistics.
Choosing 6mm ARC Bullets for Deer
- Use a hunting bullet. The 103 gr ELD-X Precision Hunter is designed to expand and hold together on game. Match bullets such as the 108 gr ELD Match are made for paper and steel.
- Avoid light varmint bullets on deer. Thin-jacketed 70 to 87 gr bullets are made to come apart fast on small animals and can fail to reach the vitals on a deer.
- Confirm accuracy and zero with the exact load you will hunt with. Every CM 6mm ARC barrel is 1:7 twist, which stabilizes 103 to 110 gr hunting bullets; see 6mm ARC twist rate.
Shot Placement With 6mm ARC for Deer
Aim for the heart and lungs, just behind the front leg, on a broadside or slightly quartering-away deer. Pass on steep quartering-toward angles and running shots. A .243-inch bullet gives less margin for a poor hit than a larger cartridge, so put the low recoil of 6mm ARC to work on careful placement. Know your rifle’s drop: with a 200-yard zero, the 103 gr lands about 9 inches low at 300 yards from 16 to 18 inches.
Is 6mm ARC Legal for Deer?
In most states, yes. A few states set minimum calibers, case lengths or energy figures, and some restrict magazine capacity or semi-automatic rifles for hunting. Check your state wildlife agency’s current regulations before the season. Cartridge specifications are in the ANSI/SAAMI centerfire rifle standard.

What is the effective range of 6mm ARC for deer?
Using a 1,000 ft-lb guideline and CM’s calculations for the 103 gr ELD-X, about 300 yards from 18 inches, 275 from 16 inches and 225 from 12.5 inches, for a skilled shooter.
What grain 6mm ARC is right for deer?
