243 for Deer: Bullets, Range and Shot Placement

243 for deer: the 243 Winchester is a proven whitetail, mule deer and pronghorn cartridge when you use a 90 to 100 gr expanding hunting bullet, keep shots within the range where it still carries about 1,000 ft-lb, and place the shot through the heart and lungs. From the 20-inch CM10 243 Winchester that Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures, a published 90 gr ELD-X load calculates to about 1,115 ft-lb at 300 yards and 930 ft-lb at 400 yards, with mild recoil that makes good shot placement easier.

Is 243 Good for Deer?

Yes. Since 1955 the 243 Winchester has taken deer across North America. Its strengths are a flat trajectory, light recoil and accurate bullets. Its limit is bullet weight: a 6 mm bullet leaves less margin for a poor hit or a heavy shoulder than a 6.5 mm or .30 caliber bullet, so bullet choice and shot placement matter. Chattahoochee Munitions recommends the 243 for deer and does not recommend it for elk or bear.

243 for Deer: Bullet Choice

  • Use 90 to 100 gr hunting bullets designed to expand and hold together: bonded, monolithic or controlled-expansion designs such as the ELD-X, Partition or similar.
  • Do not use varmint bullets (55 to 75 gr V-MAX and similar) on deer. They are designed to break up on small animals.
  • Heavier 100 to 105 gr bullets add penetration on larger bodied deer. The CM10’s 1:8 barrel stabilizes long, heavy bullets; the 1:10 barrel handles standard 90 to 100 gr hunting bullets.

243 for Deer: Energy by Range

The muzzle velocity behind these figures is Hornady’s published 3,150 fps for the 90 gr ELD-X from a 24-inch barrel. The 20-inch values are Chattahoochee Munitions calculations (published G7 BC 0.207, 200-yard zero, standard atmosphere, 10 mph full-value wind; 30 fps per inch below 24 inches). They are not chronograph data.

90 gr ELD-X, 20-inch CM10 Velocity Energy Drop (200 yd zero) 10 mph wind
Muzzle 3,030 fps 1,835 ft-lb -1.5 in 0 in
100 yd 2,798 fps 1,564 ft-lb +1.5 in 0.7 in
200 yd 2,575 fps 1,325 ft-lb 0 in 3.0 in
300 yd 2,362 fps 1,115 ft-lb -6.7 in 6.9 in
400 yd 2,159 fps 932 ft-lb -19.7 in 12.9 in

A common rule of thumb for deer is about 1,000 ft-lb at impact. With this load, that puts a practical limit near 350 yards from the CM10, and less for an unsteady position or a strong crosswind. Bullet construction and placement matter more than any single energy number.

Shot Placement: 243 for Deer

Aim for the heart and lungs behind the shoulder on a broadside or slightly quartering-away deer. Pass on steep quartering-to shots through heavy shoulder bone. The 243’s light recoil helps: in a 9 lb 8 oz gas-operated CM10, you can watch the shot through the scope and follow up quickly if needed.

Some states set minimum calibers, bullet types or energy levels for deer. The 243 Winchester meets common centerfire rules, but confirm current regulations with your state wildlife agency before you hunt. For general cartridge and chamber standards, see ANSI/SAAMI.
