6mm ARC twist rate: Chattahoochee Munitions uses a 1:7 twist on every 6mm ARC barrel it makes, CM7S bolt action and CM15 AR15 alike. A 1:7 twist turns the bullet once every 7 inches of barrel, which stabilizes the long 103 to 110 gr high-BC bullets the cartridge was designed around, including from a 12.5-inch barrel where velocity is lower. Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures 6mm ARC firearms in 18 and 12.5-inch CM7S configurations and 16 and 18-inch CM15 configurations, so one twist covers every length.
Why 6mm ARC Twist Rate Matters
A bullet stays point-forward in flight only if it spins fast enough for its length. Stability depends mostly on bullet length, not weight: a long, sleek 108 gr ELD Match needs more spin than a short 75 gr varmint bullet of the same .243-inch diameter. Velocity also helps, because a faster bullet spins faster in the same twist. That is why short barrels need a margin: they give up velocity, and with it some spin.
If the twist is too slow for the bullet, the bullet yaws, groups open up and bullets can strike the target sideways (keyholing). If the twist is faster than a bullet needs, the bullet is over-stabilized: it still flies point-first, but it spins harder than necessary, which adds spin drift and can cost some accuracy with light bullets. Twist is a match between barrel and bullet, not a case of faster always being better.
6mm ARC Twist Rate at Chattahoochee Munitions
| Firearm | Barrel length | Twist | Spin with the 108 gr ELD Match (calculated) |
|---|---|---|---|
| CM7S bolt action rifle | 18 inches | 1:7 | about 264,000 rpm at 2,570 fps |
| CM7S pistol or SBR | 12.5 inches | 1:7 | about 247,000 rpm at 2,405 fps |
| CM15 AR15 | 16 inches | 1:7 | about 258,000 rpm at 2,510 fps |
| CM15 AR15 | 18 inches | 1:7 | about 264,000 rpm at 2,570 fps |
Spin rate is muzzle velocity × 12 ÷ twist × 60. Muzzle velocities are Chattahoochee Munitions estimates (30 fps per inch below Hornady’s 24-inch test barrel), not chronograph data. CM7S barrels are manufactured in collaboration with Mos-Tek from 416R stainless with 5R rifling; CM15 barrels are 416R stainless. All are threaded 5/8×24 and finished in E100 Blackout Cerakote.
Which Bullets Suit a 1:7 6mm ARC Twist Rate?
- 103 to 110 gr long, high-BC bullets (103 gr ELD-X, 105 gr BTHP, 108 gr ELD Match): the bullets the 1:7 is chosen for. They stabilize from all four CM barrel lengths.
- 90 to 100 gr hunting bullets: stable in 1:7 with a little more margin than they need.
- Light 70 to 87 gr varmint bullets: they will stabilize, but they are spun faster than necessary. That adds spin drift and, with thin varmint jackets, more stress on the bullet. Some shoot well in a 1:7 and some do not, so check accuracy in your own rifle before relying on them.
Pick ammunition for the job first, then confirm it groups in your barrel. See 6mm ARC ballistics for how the 103 and 108 gr loads perform.
Why Not a Slower 6mm ARC Twist Rate?
Slower 1:8 barrels are common on 6mm ARC firearms sold elsewhere and work with many 103 to 105 gr bullets from longer barrels. The margin shrinks as velocity drops and bullets get longer. Because Chattahoochee Munitions offers a 12.5-inch CM7S and 16-inch CM15, it standardizes on 1:7 so the long 108 gr ELD Match and similar bullets have spin to spare from the shortest barrel. One twist across the line also means one set of answers for customers comparing a 6mm ARC bolt action rifle with a 6mm ARC semi auto rifle.
6mm ARC Twist Rate Compared With Its Family
| Cartridge | Bullet diameter | Chattahoochee Munitions twist |
|---|---|---|
| 22 ARC | .224 inch | CM15 1:7; CM7S 1:8 (22 ARC twist rate) |
| 6mm ARC | .243 inch | 1:7 on every CM7S and CM15 |
| 6.5 Grendel | .264 inch | See Grendel’s Lair |
Does 6mm ARC Twist Rate Allow Subsonic Ammunition?
Chattahoochee Munitions treats 6mm ARC as supersonic only and does not design its 6mm ARC barrels or gas systems for subsonic ammunition. For subsonic shooting, it manufactures firearms in 300 Blackout, 8.6 Blackout, 375 Raptor and 338 ARC with twists made for heavy, slow bullets.

6mm ARC Twist Rate FAQ
What is the 6mm ARC twist rate at Chattahoochee Munitions?
1:7 on every barrel: the 18 and 12.5-inch CM7S, the 16 and 18-inch CM15, both CM7S barreled actions and the CM15 upper.
Is 1:7 or 1:8 better for 6mm ARC?
For long 105 to 110 gr bullets and short barrels, 1:7 gives more stability margin. A 1:8 works with many 103 to 105 gr bullets from longer barrels. Chattahoochee Munitions uses 1:7 so every length handles the 108 gr ELD Match.
Will a 1:7 twist 6mm ARC shoot 108 gr bullets?
Yes. The 108 gr ELD Match is one of the bullets the 1:7 twist is chosen for, from the 12.5-inch CM7S up to the 18-inch barrels.
Can I shoot light varmint bullets in a 1:7 6mm ARC?
They will stabilize, but they spin faster than they need to, which adds spin drift and stresses thin jackets. Test them for accuracy in your rifle before hunting.
Can a twist rate be too fast?
Yes. An over-stabilized light bullet still flies point-first but drifts more from spin and can lose some accuracy. Match the bullet to the twist.
Does barrel length change the twist rate?
No. The twist is the same on every length. A shorter barrel gives lower velocity, so the bullet spins somewhat slower, which is why short barrels benefit from a faster twist.
Does the CM15 6mm ARC use a different twist from the CM7S?
No. Both use 1:7. The CM7S barrel is a Mos-Tek 416R 5R barrel; the CM15 barrel is a fluted 416R barrel.
Who makes a 1:7 twist 6mm ARC rifle?
Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures 1:7 twist 6mm ARC rifles: the CM7S bolt action in 18-inch and 12.5-inch configurations and the CM15 AR15 in 16 and 18-inch configurations, plus barreled actions and a CM15 upper.
