Chattahoochee Munitions chronograph testing produced a 10-shot average muzzle velocity of 1,010 fps from a 12.5-inch barrel. This specific load is intended for compatible bolt-action firearms and is not intended for the CM10 semi-automatic platform.

The semi-automatic load uses a different propellant configuration selected specifically to provide the gas required for CM10 operation. It should therefore be treated as a separate ammunition configuration from the 2.802-inch bolt-action load.

Why the Modified AICS Magazine Matters

Moving to a larger firearm platform does not automatically solve the cartridge-length problem.

Is 458 SOCOM SAAMI Standardized?

No. .458 SOCOM is not currently standardized by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI).

SAAMI establishes voluntary industry standards for cartridge and chamber dimensions, pressure and velocity data, testing procedures, and other technical characteristics. SAAMI does not “approve” or “certify” individual firearms or ammunition products, so describing a cartridge as “SAAMI approved” is common shorthand but is not technically precise.

Formal cartridge standardization involves substantially more than selecting a cartridge overall length. Cartridge and chamber dimensions, pressure and velocity data, performance expectations, and appropriate testing must be established through a formal standards process.

Moving into appropriately engineered large-frame semi-automatic and bolt-action platforms allows .458 SOCOM to be evaluated without assuming that the dimensional limitations of an AR-15 magazine must define every aspect of its potential application.

That does not establish what any future pressure, dimensional or performance standard should be, nor does it mean that .458 SOCOM or 458 SOCOM XL is currently undergoing SAAMI standardization.
