Why 8.6 Blackout Works So Well With Subsonic Ammunition

8.6 Blackout uses large-diameter .338-caliber projectiles and can be configured for both subsonic and supersonic applications. For suppressed use, the combination of heavy projectiles and subsonic velocity makes the cartridge particularly interesting.

A subsonic projectile remains below the speed of sound, eliminating the ballistic crack associated with a supersonic bullet. A suppressor can then address the muzzle blast generated by expanding propellant gases.

In the combinations we have evaluated, the 1:5 twist has provided better stabilization with this projectile class. That makes it an important option for shooters who intend to use lighter subsonic projectiles, supersonic ammunition, or a mixture of ammunition types.

When We Generally Prefer a 1:3 Twist

With barrels of approximately 12.5 inches or longer and heavier subsonic projectiles of approximately 323 grains and above, our testing has generally favored the faster 1:3 twist.

These heavier projectiles create a different stabilization requirement, and our experience with them is why we continue to make the 1:3 twist available.

These recommendations should be treated as a practical selection guide based on our testing and manufacturing experience, not as universal ballistic rules. Projectile length and construction, ammunition, velocity and barrel length can all influence stability. Two projectiles of identical weight are not necessarily identical from a stabilization standpoint.

Twist Rate Is About Matching the Rifle to the Projectile

Rather than treating twist rate as a competition in which faster is automatically better, we look at it as part of the complete firearm and ammunition combination.

If a customer is primarily interested in very heavy 8.6 Blackout subsonic ammunition, that may point toward a different barrel specification than a rifle expected to regularly fire projectiles of 300 grains or less.

The useful question is straightforward: Which twist rate provides appropriate stabilization for the projectile and configuration being used?

That is why we continue to offer both 1:3 and 1:5 twist options rather than forcing every 8.6 BLK firearm into the same barrel specification.

What Is the Best Barrel Length for 8.6 Blackout Subsonic?

After more than four years of working with different 8.6 BLK configurations, we have found the 12- to 12.5-inch barrel range particularly well suited to subsonic use.

In the subsonic loads we have evaluated, powder utilization is effectively complete within this barrel-length range. Consequently, extending the barrel beyond this point provides relatively little additional benefit from further powder utilization with those loads.

This does not mean that a longer 8.6 Blackout barrel has no purpose. A 16-inch rifle avoids the federal short-barreled-rifle classification associated with shorter stocked rifles and can also make sense for customers who place greater emphasis on supersonic ammunition.

But for a firearm being configured primarily around 8.6 Blackout subsonic ammunition and suppression, we have found approximately 12 to 12.5 inches to provide an excellent balance.

That barrel length also helps control the overall length of the completed suppressed firearm. Once a suppressor is installed, additional barrel length contributes directly to the total length of the package.

Suppressing 8.6 Blackout

Suppressor selection is another area where specifications on paper do not always tell the complete story.

Chattahoochee Munitions has tested 8.6 Blackout with numerous suppressors and has found meaningful differences between designs. Internal volume, construction, baffle geometry, bore diameter, ammunition, barrel length and host firearm can all influence the sound signature of the complete system.

One general trend we have observed is that, when comparing suppressors of similar volume, steel suppressors have generally provided better sound suppression than comparable titanium suppressors in our testing.

That should not be interpreted to mean that every steel suppressor will outperform every titanium suppressor. Suppressor architecture matters too much to make that comparison based on material alone.

Instead, it highlights a practical tradeoff when selecting a suppressor for an 8.6 Blackout subsonic system.

Steel vs Titanium Suppressors

For a shooter whose primary goal is maximizing sound reduction, suppressor weight may be an acceptable compromise. In that situation, a well-designed steel suppressor deserves serious consideration.

Titanium, on the other hand, can provide a substantial reduction in suppressor weight. That can be particularly valuable on a hunting rifle or a firearm that will be carried for extended periods.

The correct choice therefore depends on the priorities of the complete rifle. Maximum suppression and minimum system weight are not always achieved by the same suppressor.

Suppressor performance also depends on how sound is measured. SAAMI publishes industry standards addressing firearm and suppressor testing, which is one reason Chattahoochee Munitions avoids reducing suppressor performance to a single material, specification or generalized sound claim.

Bolt Action vs Semi-Automatic 8.6 Blackout

Chattahoochee Munitions builds 8.6 Blackout on two primary firearm platforms: the CM7S bolt action and the CM10 semi-automatic.

Both can be configured around 8.6 Blackout subsonic ammunition and suppressed use, but they approach the cartridge from two different platform architectures.

CM7S 8.6 Blackout Bolt Action

The CM7S is our Remington 700-footprint bolt-action platform. For shooters primarily interested in suppressed shooting, hunting or a manually operated firearm, the CM7S provides a purpose-built platform around which to configure an 8.6 BLK system.

The CM7S uses our three-lug action with a 60-degree bolt throw, M16-style extractor, integrated recoil lug and pinned 20 MOA rail. It accepts Remington 700-pattern triggers and uses AICS-pattern magazine architecture appropriate to the configuration.

Chattahoochee Munitions vets the magazines used with the CM7S rather than leaving magazine compatibility to experimentation after the firearm reaches the customer.

CM10 8.6 Blackout AR10

For shooters who want a semi-automatic 8.6 BLK, the CM10 uses a conventional AR-10/SR-25-pattern architecture.

This distinction is important because the 8.6 Blackout CM10 should not be confused with the specialized center-feed CM10 configurations Chattahoochee Munitions developed for cartridges such as 375 Raptor and 458 SOCOM XL. The 8.6 BLK version remains within the conventional AR-10/SR-25 operating and magazine architecture.

Feeding large .338-caliber projectiles reliably requires attention to more than the chamber and barrel. Chattahoochee Munitions uses customized feed ramps on the CM10 8.6 Blackout to support reliable feeding of the large projectiles used with the cartridge. We also use CM-vetted magazines with our 8.6 Blackout systems rather than leaving magazine compatibility to trial and error after the firearm reaches the customer.

The CM10 incorporates a Superlative Arms adjustable gas block and an ODIN Works AR10 adjustable buffer. Together, these components provide additional control over the operating system when configuring the rifle for different ammunition and suppressed use.

That adjustability is particularly useful with 8.6 Blackout because a semi-automatic rifle may be expected to operate with substantially different projectile weights and ammunition configurations. Rather than treating the gas and buffer systems as fixed variables, the CM10 provides adjustment on both sides of the operating system.

As with the CM7S, the CM10 can be ordered with either a 1:3 or 1:5 twist so the barrel can be matched more closely to the intended projectile class.

Magazine Reliability Matters With 8.6 Blackout

A complete 8.6 Blackout system is not just a barrel and chamber. Magazine geometry and feeding are particularly important when working with the large projectiles available for the cartridge.

Magazine compatibility should not have to become an experiment for the customer. Chattahoochee Munitions vets the magazines supplied and recommended for our 8.6 Blackout platforms as part of the complete firearm system.

On the semi-automatic CM10, those vetted magazines work in conjunction with feed ramps customized for the large projectiles used by 8.6 BLK. On the CM7S, vetted AICS-pattern magazines are selected for the bolt-action platform.

The objective is simple: the customer should be able to concentrate on selecting ammunition appropriate to the firearm rather than having to determine which magazine will reliably feed the cartridge after purchasing the rifle.

Choosing an 8.6 Blackout Configuration

There is no single configuration we would recommend for every 8.6 BLK owner. The better approach is to start with the ammunition and intended use and work backward toward the firearm.

For a shooter primarily using projectiles of approximately 300 grains or less in a barrel of 12.5 inches or longer, our experience generally points toward the 1:5 twist.

For someone building around 323-grain-and-heavier subsonic projectiles with a barrel of 12.5 inches or longer, our testing generally favors the 1:3 twist.

For a dedicated suppressed system, the 12- to 12.5-inch barrel range has proven particularly effective with the subsonic loads we have evaluated.

From there, the decision between the CM7S and CM10 largely comes down to whether the shooter wants a bolt-action or semi-automatic platform. Suppressor selection can then be balanced between sound reduction, size and weight.

For the semi-automatic CM10, the adjustable gas and buffer systems provide additional tuning capability, while customized feed ramps and vetted magazines address the feeding requirements of the cartridge’s large .338-caliber projectiles.
