22 ARC Rifle: AR-15 vs Bolt Action, Barrel Length and Applications

What Is the 22 ARC?
The 22 ARC is a SAAMI-standardized centerfire rifle cartridge introduced by Hornady. The standardized cartridge dimensions allow 22 ARC to operate within the dimensional constraints of the AR-15 platform while taking advantage of modern .224-caliber projectile designs.
Hornady developed the cartridge around high-ballistic-coefficient .22-caliber bullets and specifically designed it for compatibility with the AR-15. The cartridge also has an important second application: bolt-action rifles.
That gives shooters two substantially different ways to take advantage of 22 ARC.

22 ARC AR-15 Rifle: The CM15 Approach

CM offers CM15 22 ARC rifles with:

The different lengths allow a CM15 to be selected around the shooter’s priorities rather than treating every 22 ARC application as identical.
A 16-inch CM15 emphasizes a more compact overall package. Moving to 18 inches provides a middle ground between compactness and additional barrel length. The CM15 22 ARC Is a Complete Operating System
A semi-automatic rifle is more than a barrel chambered for a particular cartridge.
The gas system, reciprocating components and ammunition interact to determine how the firearm operates. Those relationships become particularly important when a suppressor is added.
CM15 22 ARC rifles incorporate a Superlative Arms adjustable gas block and an ODIN Works Adjustable Buffer — AR15 Heavy.
The Superlative Arms gas block provides control over the gas system and incorporates the company’s Bleed Off® operating mode. Rather than relying exclusively on restricting gas, this system can vent excess gas forward through the block.
The ODIN Works adjustable heavy buffer provides another point of adjustment within the operating system. Its configurable weights allow buffer mass to be changed to suit the rifle’s setup.
Together, these components provide adjustment at both the gas and buffer sides of the CM15 operating system.
CM15 rifles also use the Breek Arms WARHAMMER Mod2 ambidextrous charging handle, providing ambidextrous operation within the AR-15 platform.
Suppressing a Semi-Automatic 22 ARC Rifle

A suppressor can reduce muzzle blast, but it cannot eliminate the ballistic crack generated by a projectile traveling faster than the speed of sound. The objective is therefore different from cartridges and systems designed primarily around subsonic ammunition.

Adding a suppressor to a gas-operated firearm can change the pressure environment in which the action operates. A flow-oriented suppressor can reduce the amount of additional backpressure introduced into the system.

22 ARC Bolt Action Rifle: The CM7S Approach
The Chattahoochee Munitions CM7S takes the same cartridge in a fundamentally different direction.
Instead of using cartridge gas to operate a semi-automatic action, the CM7S is manually operated.
CM offers two primary 22 ARC CM7S configurations:
- 18-inch complete bolt-action rifles
- 12.5-inch compact bolt-action firearms
CM also offers both barrel lengths as barreled actions for customers building around their own preferred configuration.
The absence of a semi-automatic gas system changes not only the way the firearm operates but also how factors such as suppression can be approached.
18-Inch CM7S 22 ARC Bolt Action Rifle
The 18-inch CM7S 22 ARC bolt action rifle represents the conventional rifle branch of the CM7S 22 ARC family.
It is available in three color configurations.
At the same 18-inch nominal barrel length, a customer can therefore choose between two very different Chattahoochee Munitions platforms:
CM15 — semi-automatic AR-15
or
CM7S — manually operated bolt action
That makes the choice about considerably more than barrel length.
A shooter who values rapid semi-automatic operation and AR-15 architecture may gravitate toward the CM15. Someone who prefers a manually operated action, a different suppressor strategy or the characteristics of a bolt-action platform may instead choose the CM7S.
The cartridge remains the same. The host changes considerably.
12.5-Inch CM7S 22 ARC: Pistol or SBR
Chattahoochee Munitions also offers the CM7S with a 12.5-inch 22 ARC barrel in three color configurations.
These firearms can be selected as either a pistol or Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) configuration, providing a distinctly different alternative to the conventional 18-inch CM7S rifle.
The shorter barrel emphasizes compact overall dimensions while retaining the supersonic character of 22 ARC.
It also creates an unusual combination: a compact 22 ARC firearm with a manually operated bolt action.
Because cycling does not depend upon propellant gas, the 12.5-inch CM7S avoids the gas-system considerations associated with a comparably compact semi-automatic host.
For customers interested in a compact 22 ARC platform, the result is a choice between pistol and SBR configurations without changing the fundamental CM7S bolt-action operating system.
Suppressing a CM7S 22 ARC Bolt Action
For the CM7S, Chattahoochee Munitions favors a conventional enclosed suppressor.
The reason is straightforward.
Because the CM7S is manually operated, suppressor backpressure does not have to be balanced against a semi-automatic gas system. There is no gas block, gas tube or buffer system dependent upon propellant gas for cycling.
That allows suppressor selection to concentrate more directly on muzzle-blast reduction without simultaneously managing gas required to cycle the firearm.
This principle applies to both the 18-inch CM7S rifle and 12.5-inch CM7S pistol/SBR configurations.
The projectile remains supersonic, however, and therefore retains its ballistic crack.
That is an important distinction: suppressed does not mean silent.

16 vs 18 vs 20 Inch 22 ARC Rifle Configurations
Barrel length is one of the most obvious decisions when choosing a 22 ARC rifle, but there is no universally correct answer.
The CM catalog provides several different approaches.
16-Inch 22 ARC
The CM15 16-inch configuration provides the shortest conventional rifle barrel in the CM15 22 ARC lineup.
It is suited to customers who place greater emphasis on compactness and handling while retaining a conventional rifle configuration.
Chattahoochee Munitions also offers a 16-inch CM15 22 ARC upper, providing another route into the platform for customers with an appropriate AR-15 lower.
18-Inch 22 ARC
Eighteen inches occupies the middle of the CM15 lineup and is also the barrel length used for the conventional CM7S 22 ARC rifle.

At 18 inches, the decision can center on the operating system itself:
semi-automatic CM15 or bolt-action CM7S.
For someone deciding between the two platforms, this removes barrel length as the primary distinction and allows the characteristics of the firearm itself to drive the decision.
20-Inch 22 ARC
The 20-inch CM15 is the longest 22 ARC configuration currently offered by Chattahoochee Munitions.
It provides an option for shooters willing to accept additional overall length in a rifle intended to take greater advantage of the velocity-oriented character of 22 ARC.
12.5-Inch 22 ARC
The 12.5-inch CM7S sits outside the conventional rifle-length comparison.
Rather than serving as simply a shorter version of the 18-inch rifle, it creates a separate compact pistol/SBR branch within the Flight Deck 22 lineup.
This makes the CM 22 ARC catalog span from a 12.5-inch manually operated compact firearm through a 20-inch semi-automatic rifle.
CM7S 22 ARC Barreled Actions
Not every shooter wants a completed factory configuration.
Chattahoochee Munitions offers CM7S 22 ARC barreled actions in both 18-inch and 12.5-inch configurations.
The 18-inch barreled action provides the foundation for a conventional bolt-action rifle build, while the 12.5-inch version provides the corresponding compact foundation.
This allows customers to build around their own stock or chassis preferences while starting with the CM7S action and 22 ARC barrel configuration.

Sharing a cartridge does not mean the CM15 and CM7S share the same magazine architecture.
