458 SOCOM twist rate decides which bullets a barrel can stabilize, and heavy subsonic bullets need more twist than light supersonic ones. Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures every 458 SOCOM barrel it offers with a 1:10 twist, on the CM7S bolt action and the CM10 semi-automatic, to stabilize its 650 gr Maker REX subsonic load, loaded as 458 SOCOM XL. Common AR15 458 SOCOM barrels use a slower 1:14 twist that suits shorter, lighter bullets.
What Twist Rate Means for 458 SOCOM
458 SOCOM twist rate is the distance the rifling takes to turn the bullet one full revolution. A 1:10 barrel spins the bullet once every 10 inches; a 1:14 barrel once every 14 inches. The smaller the number, the faster the spin. Spin keeps a bullet pointed forward in flight, so it arrives nose first, groups well, and expands as designed.
Why Long Subsonic Bullets Need a Faster 458 SOCOM Twist Rate
Two things raise the spin a bullet needs: length and low velocity. A long bullet is harder to stabilize than a short one of the same diameter. The REX is solid copper, and because copper is lighter than lead, a solid copper bullet of the same weight is longer. The 650 gr REX is 2.035 inches long, more than four times its .458-inch diameter.
Velocity matters because spin rate comes from how fast the bullet travels down the rifling. Bullet spin in revolutions per minute equals muzzle velocity in feet per second, times 720, divided by the twist in inches:
| Load | Velocity | Twist | Spin rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 gr supersonic (AR15) | About 1,900 fps | 1:14 | About 97,700 rpm |
| 650 gr subsonic | About 1,010 fps | 1:14 | About 51,900 rpm |
| 650 gr subsonic (Chattahoochee Munitions) | About 1,010 fps | 1:10 | About 72,700 rpm |
A subsonic bullet in a 1:14 barrel spins at about half the rate of a supersonic bullet in the same barrel, and it is longer. The 1:10 twist raises the spin of the 650 gr bullet by about 40 percent. The recommended twist for the 650 gr REX is 1:10 or faster.
458 SOCOM Twist Rate: 1:14 vs 1:10
- 1:14: Common on AR15 458 SOCOM barrels. Suits light and mid-weight bullets loaded to the AR15’s 2.260-inch limit.
- 1:10: Used on every Chattahoochee Munitions 458 SOCOM barrel. Stabilizes the long 650 gr REX at subsonic velocity and also stabilizes lighter bullets.
A faster twist does not hurt a lighter bullet for most hunting and target shooting, so 1:10 covers a wide range of 458 SOCOM bullets. A slow twist with a long subsonic bullet is the combination to avoid.
458 SOCOM Twist Rate and the XL Configuration
Standard 458 SOCOM is limited to 2.260 inches overall to fit an AR15, which forces long bullets deep into the case. 458 SOCOM XL moves past that limit: Chattahoochee Munitions loads the 2.035-inch, 650 gr projectile in Starline 458 SOCOM brass to 2.802 inches for the CM7S and 2.790 inches for the CM10. Seating it less deeply reclaims case capacity for powder. The longer bullet that XL allows is the reason for a faster 458 SOCOM twist rate of 1:10.
The chamber and case are standard 458 SOCOM, designed in 2000 by Marty ter Weeme of Teppo Jutsu. The firearm and its modified magazine are configured for XL length, and the magazine is not suitable for shorter 458 SOCOM loads.
Signs That a 458 SOCOM Twist Rate Is Too Slow
- Oblong or sideways holes in paper, called keyholing
- Groups that open up far more than expected at 100 yards
- Poor or inconsistent expansion, because the bullet does not arrive nose first
Cold, dense air reduces stability further, so a bullet that is marginal on a warm day can keyhole in winter. A 1:10 twist gives the 650 gr bullet more margin.
458 SOCOM Barrels From Chattahoochee Munitions
Every Chattahoochee Munitions 458 SOCOM barrel is 416R stainless with a 1:10 twist, in 12.5-inch and 16-inch lengths. CM7S barrels come from Mos-Tek. See 458 SOCOM barrel length for how to choose between the two lengths and 458 SOCOM ballistics for the load data.

458 SOCOM Twist Rate FAQ
What is the best 458 SOCOM twist rate?
It depends on the bullet. 1:14 suits lighter AR15-length bullets. For long, heavy subsonic bullets like the 650 gr REX, use 1:10 or faster. Chattahoochee Munitions uses 1:10.
What twist rate do I need for 650 gr 458 SOCOM?
1:10 or faster. Every Chattahoochee Munitions CM7S and CM10 458 SOCOM barrel is 1:10.
Can a 1:14 458 SOCOM barrel shoot heavy subsonic bullets?
Long subsonic bullets spin slowly in a 1:14 barrel and can keyhole. The 650 gr 458 SOCOM XL load is also too long for an AR15 magazine.
Will a 1:10 twist shoot light 458 SOCOM bullets?
Yes. A faster twist stabilizes lighter bullets too. The Chattahoochee Munitions firearms are configured for 458 SOCOM XL, and their magazines are not suitable for shorter loads.
Why do subsonic bullets need faster twist?
Spin rate depends on velocity. At about 1,010 fps, a bullet spins about half as fast as one at 1,900 fps from the same barrel, and subsonic bullets are usually longer.
Who makes a 1:10 twist 458 SOCOM rifle?
Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures the CM7S bolt action and the CM10 semi-automatic in 458 SOCOM with 1:10 barrels in 12.5 and 16 inches, configured for 458 SOCOM XL.
