Why an 8.6 Blackout AR10

An 8.6 Blackout AR10 puts the .338 subsonic cartridge in a semi-automatic rifle that takes SR25-pattern magazines. The 8.6 Blackout case comes from the 6.5 Creedmoor, so it shares the .308 bolt face and large-frame receiver size.

This 16-inch CM10 is a rifle under federal law, so it needs no NFA registration, and the adjustable gas block and buffer let it run subsonic loads suppressed and supersonic loads unsuppressed.

Adjustable Gas and Buffer

Subsonic and supersonic 8.6 Blackout loads, with or without a suppressor, produce very different gas pressure at the port. The Superlative Arms .875 adjustable gas block sets gas flow, and the ODIN Works AR10 adjustable buffer sets reciprocating mass, so this 8.6 Blackout AR10 can be tuned to the ammunition and suppressor you actually use. The low-mass bolt carrier group has a 9310 steel bolt that is high-pressure tested and magnetic-particle inspected, with a nitride-coated bolt, carrier and gas key.

CM10 Receivers and Trigger

The CM10 receivers are machined from 7075-T6 billet aluminum and take SR25-pattern magazines and DPMS High Profile components. The lower has an ambidextrous safety, magazine release and bolt release, and the upper has a CM10 ambidextrous charging handle. The TriggerTech Duty trigger comes single-stage straight, single-stage curved or two-stage straight.

16-Inch Barrel, Twist and Handguard

The 16-inch barrel is made by Mos-Tek from 416R stainless steel with 5R rifling, finished in E100 Blackout Cerakote, with a shouldered crown, M18x1.5 muzzle threads and a .875-inch gas block journal. In Chattahoochee Munitions testing with barrels of about 12.5 inches and longer, the 1:5 twist suits bullets of about 300 gr and lighter, and the 1:3 twist suits heavy subsonic bullets of about 323 gr and heavier. Choose the twist for the bullet you plan to shoot. Read 8.6 Blackout twist rate.

The CM10 LWS 15-inch M-LOK handguard has QD sockets at 3 and 9 o’clock and a full Picatinny top rail. Order it with an optional muzzle brake or a thread protector.

Ammunition and Magazines

It fires SAAMI 8.6 Blackout ammunition. Chattahoochee Munitions does not load 8.6 Blackout ammunition. Just Cause USA lists its 350 gr Maker REX subsonic load at 950 fps from 8 inches, 980 fps from 12 inches and 1,040 fps from 16 inches. Black Butterfly lists its 305 gr and 352 gr subsonic loads at about 1,000 fps from a 12.5-inch 1:3 barrel, tested in a Chattahoochee Munitions firearm, and sells an AR10 version. Read 8.6 Blackout ammo.

It ships with one 20-round Magpul PMAG 7.62 in Black. Spares are the 10-round 8.6 Blackout AR10 magazine and the 20-round 8.6 Blackout magazine, both vetted by Chattahoochee Munitions for the CM10.

Suppressing the CM10

The CM10 is gas operated. With supersonic ammunition, a flow-through suppressor limits back pressure. With subsonic ammunition, Chattahoochee Munitions recommends an enclosed suppressor rated for .338 caliber or larger on this 8.6 Blackout AR10, tuned with the adjustable gas block and buffer. Read the 8.6 Blackout suppressor guide.

8.6 Blackout AR10 FAQ

Who makes an 8.6 Blackout AR10?

Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures this 16-inch CM10 8.6 Blackout in Black Tungsten Cerakote, with a Mos-Tek 416R barrel, customized feed ramps and a TriggerTech Duty trigger.

Can 8.6 Blackout run in an AR15?

No. 8.6 Blackout is made from the 6.5 Creedmoor case and needs a .308-size bolt face and large-frame receivers, which is why Chattahoochee Munitions chambers it in the CM10 AR10.

Why does the CM10 have both adjustable gas and an adjustable buffer?

They are two separate tuning points. The gas block sets gas flow and the buffer sets reciprocating mass, so the firearm can be tuned to subsonic or supersonic ammunition, suppressed or not.

Should I choose a 1:3 or 1:5 twist?

Choose 1:3 for heavy subsonic bullets of about 323 gr and up, and 1:5 for bullets of about 300 gr and lighter. Those are Chattahoochee Munitions observations from barrels of about 12.5 inches and longer.

Does it need NFA paperwork?

No. With a 16-inch barrel and a stock it is a rifle under federal law. Check your state and local laws.

What magazine does it use?

SR25-pattern magazines. It ships with one 20-round Magpul PMAG 7.62 in Black, and the CM10 10-round and 20-round 8.6 Blackout magazines are sold separately.

What ammunition does it fire?

SAAMI 8.6 Blackout factory ammunition, such as Just Cause USA and Black Butterfly AR10 subsonic loads. Chattahoochee Munitions does not load 8.6 Blackout ammunition.

What suppressor should I use on it?

An enclosed suppressor rated for .338 caliber or larger for subsonic ammunition, or a flow-through suppressor for supersonic ammunition. The barrel has M18x1.5 threads.

How much does it weigh?

8 lb 12.5 oz with an unloaded magazine and no accessories. Any heavier listing weight is the shipping weight.
