22 Creedmoor Twist Rate: Why Chattahoochee Munitions Uses 1:8

22 Creedmoor twist rate: the cartridge was designed around long, heavy .224 bullets of 75 to 88 gr, so it needs a fast twist, usually 1:7 to 1:8. Chattahoochee Munitions uses a 1:8 twist on the 22-inch 416R stainless barrel of every CM10 22 Creedmoor. A 1:8 barrel stabilizes the 88 gr bullets the cartridge is known for and still fires lighter varmint bullets.

What Twist Rate Means

Twist rate is the distance the rifling takes to turn the bullet one full revolution. A 1:8 barrel turns the bullet once every 8 inches; 1:14 turns it once every 14 inches. Long bullets need more spin to stay point-forward, and bullet length matters more than weight. A 88 gr ELD Match is far longer than a 55 gr varmint bullet, so it needs a faster twist.

Why the 22 Creedmoor Twist Rate Is Fast

A fast 22 Creedmoor twist rate is the reason the cartridge exists.

The whole point of the 22 Creedmoor is to fire heavy, high-BC .224 bullets fast. Those bullets resist wind and keep their speed, which is how the 22 Creedmoor out-carries the 22-250 past 300 yards (see 22 Creedmoor ballistics). A slow 22-250 style twist cannot stabilize them, so a 22 Creedmoor barrel has to be fast.

22 Creedmoor Twist Rate by Bullet Weight

Bullet Typical use CM10 1:8
50 to 62 gr varmint Prairie dogs, foxes Stable; very light, thin-jacketed bullets can come apart at high spin, so check accuracy before relying on them
70 to 80 gr hunting and match Coyotes, long-range varmints, steel Stable
85 to 88 gr match Long-range steel and varmints Stable; this is what the 22 Creedmoor was designed for

Stability also depends on bullet shape, velocity, air density and temperature, so treat the table as a guide and confirm accuracy with your ammunition.

Can a Twist Rate Be Too Fast?

Yes. Extra spin adds spin drift at long range, and very light varmint bullets with thin jackets can fail at high rotational speed. That is why Chattahoochee Munitions uses 1:8 and not a faster rate: the 88 gr bullets stabilize, and lighter bullets still shoot.

Yes. The CM10’s 1:8 barrel stabilizes 88 gr bullets.

Can I shoot 55 gr bullets in a 22 Creedmoor?

Yes, from a 1:8 barrel, though the cartridge’s advantage comes from heavier bullets. Check accuracy with very light, thin-jacketed bullets.
