338 ARC Subsonic: Understanding the .338-Caliber AR-15 Cartridge

338 ARC Subsonic brings heavy .338-caliber projectile capability to the compact AR-15 platform. Developed around both subsonic and supersonic operation, the 338 Advanced Rifle Cartridge gives shooters another option for building a compact suppressed rifle without moving to the larger AR-10 platform.

That combination makes 338 ARC particularly interesting. It occupies a space between established cartridges such as 300 Blackout and larger .338-caliber cartridges such as 8.6 Blackout. Understanding where it fits requires looking beyond bullet diameter and examining the complete system: action size, case capacity, projectile weight, barrel length, twist rate, ammunition, and suppressor use.

At Chattahoochee Munitions, our experience with 338 ARC builds on years of manufacturing and testing suppressed rifles and heavy .338-caliber platforms. That experience has also led us to make some different configuration choices than the minimum industry specifications, particularly with barrel twist rate.

What Is 338 ARC?

The 338 Advanced Rifle Cartridge is a .338-caliber cartridge designed to operate within the overall cartridge-length constraints of the AR-15 platform. It is part of the ARC cartridge family and uses the compact case architecture that allows larger-diameter cartridges to function within an AR-15-sized action.

SAAMI standardized the 338 Advanced Rifle Cartridge with a maximum cartridge overall length of 2.260 inches, a maximum average pressure of 52,000 psi, and a .338-inch groove diameter. The standardized chamber specification lists a 1:8 right-hand twist as an optional twist rate.

Those dimensions are important because they explain one of the cartridge’s defining characteristics: 338 ARC delivers .338-caliber projectile capability from an AR-15-sized platform.

Hornady introduced factory 338 ARC Subsonic ammunition with a 307-grain Sub-X load alongside a lighter 175-grain supersonic offering. The combination demonstrates the unusually broad operating envelope intended for the cartridge: heavy subsonic projectiles for suppressed applications and lighter supersonic projectiles when greater velocity and a flatter trajectory are desired.

Why 338 ARC Subsonic Matters

The most distinctive application for the cartridge is 338 ARC Subsonic. Instead of relying primarily on velocity to generate performance, subsonic ammunition uses heavier projectiles traveling below the speed of sound.

This is particularly relevant for suppressed firearms. A suppressor can reduce muzzle blast, but it cannot eliminate the ballistic crack produced when a projectile travels faster than the speed of sound. Keeping the projectile subsonic removes that component of the sound signature.

Heavy .338-caliber projectiles also provide substantially more projectile mass than the bullets commonly used in 300 Blackout subsonic ammunition. Hornady specifically developed its 307-grain Sub-X projectile for 338 ARC subsonic use.

The result is a cartridge that can combine a compact AR-15 platform, heavy-for-platform projectile weights, and suppressed subsonic operation.

338 ARC Subsonic in the AR-15 Platform

One of the biggest advantages of 338 ARC Subsonic is its ability to operate within an AR-15-sized firearm.

That distinguishes it from cartridges such as 8.6 Blackout, which operate in the larger AR-10 or short-action bolt-gun envelope. The smaller platform can reduce overall firearm size and weight while retaining the familiar ergonomics and architecture of the AR-15.

However, fitting a .338-caliber cartridge into that smaller envelope also creates engineering constraints. Case capacity is more limited than with larger short-action cartridges, and magazine geometry becomes particularly important.

338 ARC Twist Rate: 1:8 vs. 1:5

Twist rate is one of the areas where Chattahoochee Munitions takes a different approach to 338 ARC Subsonic.

The SAAMI specification identifies 1:8 as an optional standardized twist rate, and 1:8 is commonly associated with commercial 338 ARC firearms. That rate provides a practical baseline for the cartridge and accommodates a broad range of projectile construction and ammunition types.

Chattahoochee Munitions uses 1:5 twist barrels in our CM7S 338 ARC bolt-action firearms and in our shorter CM15 configurations.

That decision comes from our experience with heavy .338-caliber projectiles and subsonic ammunition. In CM testing, we have found the Hornady 307-grain Sub-X performs better from our 1:5 twist barrels than from the slower 1:8 configuration.

This should not be interpreted to mean that 1:8 is inherently incorrect. Rather, twist rate is part of the complete firearm and ammunition system. Projectile weight, length, construction, velocity, and intended use all matter when determining the appropriate barrel configuration.

For CM’s heavy-projectile and suppressed applications, the faster twist is an intentional design choice based on our testing.

338 ARC Subsonic Barrel Length

Barrel length is another important consideration when configuring a 338 ARC Subsonic rifle.

Longer barrels do not automatically produce a proportionate performance increase. As the propellant approaches effective utilization, additional barrel length can produce diminishing velocity gains while continuing to increase the overall length of the firearm.

In Chattahoochee Munitions testing and loading experience with the 338 ARC configurations we have evaluated, powder utilization occurs at approximately the 12-inch range. That makes the 12.5-inch barrel a particularly logical configuration for the cartridge.

For that reason, CM offers 12.5-inch configurations where compact overall length and efficient use of the cartridge are priorities.

We also offer 16-inch versions. These are especially useful for customers who want a conventional rifle configuration without the additional regulatory requirements associated with a short-barreled rifle.

The longer barrel should not automatically be interpreted as substantially more effective. Once most of the available propellant has been utilized, additional barrel length may provide relatively modest velocity gains depending on the specific ammunition.

What About 10-Inch and 8.5-Inch 338 ARC Barrels?

CM also offers shorter CM15 configurations because maximum ballistic efficiency is not the only design objective for a suppressed rifle.

A 10-inch or 8.5-inch barrel sacrifices some potential velocity and powder utilization in exchange for a substantially shorter firearm. Once a suppressor is added, that reduction in barrel length can have a meaningful effect on the overall handling characteristics of the system.

For customers prioritizing compactness, those shorter configurations can make sense. For customers looking for a balance between compact dimensions and powder utilization, approximately 12 inches remains a particularly useful point in the cartridge’s performance envelope based on our experience.

Suppressing 338 ARC Subsonic

338 ARC Subsonic is naturally suited to suppressed firearm configurations, but it is important to understand what a suppressor does and does not accomplish.

A suppressor reduces the muzzle blast generated as high-pressure propellant gases exit the barrel. When firing supersonic ammunition, the projectile still creates a ballistic crack as it travels through the atmosphere.

Subsonic ammunition avoids that supersonic flight signature.

Firearm Noise and Suppressor Use

Suppressors should not be confused with eliminating firearm noise. The discharge of a firearm produces high-intensity impulse noise, and the actual sound exposure varies with the firearm, ammunition, environment, suppressor, and measurement location.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) identifies firearms as a source of potentially hazardous impulse noise. NIOSH research notes that high-intensity impulse exposure can present a risk of hearing damage and requires specialized measurement methods to characterize accurately.

NIOSH has also identified suppressors as an engineering control that can help reduce firearm-noise exposure. Its firearms-hearing research has found that suppressors can reduce measured sound exposure, although suppressed firearms can still present a significant hearing risk. A suppressor reduces the muzzle-blast component of the firing event, while 338 ARC Subsonic ammunition also avoids the ballistic crack associated with a projectile traveling faster than the speed of sound.

Those are two different sources of sound. This distinction is one reason a cartridge designed around both suppressor use and heavy subsonic ammunition can be particularly useful. Suppression addresses muzzle blast, while subsonic velocity eliminates the supersonic flight signature.

Hearing protection should still be used when appropriate. NIOSH continues to identify firearm impulse noise as a hearing hazard even when engineering controls are employed.

For semi-automatic firearms, sufficient gas energy must also remain available to operate the action. Adjustable gas and buffer systems can be valuable when balancing suppressed operation, ammunition characteristics, and reliable cycling.

338 ARC Subsonic vs. Supersonic

Although 338 ARC Subsonic is a major reason for interest in the cartridge, 338 ARC is not exclusively a subsonic cartridge.

Supersonic loads use lighter projectiles at substantially greater velocity. These loads provide a flatter trajectory and extend the practical ballistic envelope of the cartridge.

Subsonic loads take the opposite approach. They use heavier projectiles at velocities below the speed of sound and are particularly attractive when suppressed performance and compact firearm configuration are priorities.

This gives 338 ARC two distinct operating personalities:

  • Supersonic: lighter projectiles, greater velocity, and flatter trajectory.
  • Subsonic: heavier projectiles, lower velocity, and an emphasis on suppressed operation.

Neither configuration is universally better. The appropriate choice depends on the intended application.

338 ARC Subsonic vs. 300 Blackout

300 Blackout established the concept of running both supersonic and heavy subsonic ammunition from the AR-15 platform.

338 ARC expands that concept into a larger projectile diameter.

Hornady states that its 338 ARC subsonic ammunition delivers approximately 1.5 times the energy of 300 Blackout subsonic ammunition. That comparison reflects the substantially heavier projectile available in 338 ARC while remaining within the AR-15 platform.

That does not make 300 Blackout obsolete. The two cartridges occupy different positions in the market. 300 Blackout has an enormous installed base, broad ammunition availability, and extensive component support.

The advantage of 338 ARC Subsonic is the ability to move into significantly heavier .338-caliber projectiles without moving into an AR-10-sized firearm.

338 ARC vs. 8.6 Blackout

Comparisons between 338 ARC and 8.6 Blackout are inevitable because both cartridges use .338-caliber projectiles and both have strong suppressed and subsonic applications.

But they solve the problem from different platform envelopes.

338 ARC is built around the AR-15 envelope. Its smaller case and shorter overall cartridge length allow it to function in the smaller platform.

8.6 Blackout operates in the larger AR-10 and short-action envelope. That provides greater case capacity and more room for very heavy projectiles.

That distinction creates the fundamental tradeoff.

338 ARC offers a smaller and potentially lighter firearm. The price of that compact architecture is less case capacity and a more constrained projectile and powder envelope.

8.6 Blackout provides greater internal volume and more room for extremely heavy .338-caliber projectiles, but requires a larger firearm platform.

For that reason, it is more useful to view these cartridges as two different engineering solutions rather than attempting to declare one universally superior to the other.

338 ARC Subsonic in a Bolt-Action Rifle

The AR-15 receives much of the attention surrounding the cartridge, but 338 ARC Subsonic also makes considerable sense in a compact bolt-action firearm. Removing the requirement to cycle a semi-automatic action creates an especially straightforward platform for shooters primarily interested in heavy subsonic ammunition and suppressed operation.

Is 338 ARC a Good Subsonic Cartridge?

For the right application, yes.

The principal appeal of 338 ARC Subsonic is not simply that it launches a .338-caliber projectile below the speed of sound. Its significance comes from doing so within a compact AR-15-compatible cartridge envelope while retaining the ability to use supersonic ammunition as well.

For shooters seeking maximum .338-caliber case capacity or the heaviest possible projectile envelope, a larger cartridge such as 8.6 Blackout may be more appropriate.

For shooters who place a premium on the AR-15 platform, compact dimensions, suppressed operation, and heavier projectiles than those typically associated with 300 Blackout, 338 ARC occupies a compelling position.
