375 Raptor Barrel Length: 12.5 Inch vs 16 Inch for Subsonic and Supersonic

The best 375 Raptor barrel length depends on which load you shoot most. For suppressed subsonic shooting, 12.5 inches is the best choice: the 400 gr subsonic load reaches its full velocity, about 1,016 fps, and the suppressed firearm stays short. For supersonic hunting at longer distances, or to avoid SBR registration, 16 inches is the better 375 Raptor barrel length. Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures every 375 Raptor firearm it offers in exactly these two lengths, in the CM7S bolt action and the CM10 semi-automatic, for the cartridge designed by Arne Brennan.

375 Raptor Barrel Length Options at a Glance

Configuration Barrel Weight Overall length NFA status
CM7S bolt action SBR or pistol 12.5 in 6 lb 6 oz (SBR) 25.00 to 32.50 in (SBR) SBR requires a Form 4; pistol configuration with Tailhook brace
CM7S with PLACID OTB 12.5 in 7 lb 13.6 oz with suppressor Suppressor adds only its forward section SBR and suppressor
CM7S WOOX walnut SBR 12.5 in 7 lb 12 oz 31.75 to 32.50 in SBR
CM7S bolt action rifle 16 in 7 lb 4 oz 28.25 to 36.00 in Rifle, no SBR registration
CM7S WOOX walnut rifle 16 in 8 lb 10 oz 35.50 to 36.50 in Rifle
CM10 semi-automatic SBR 12.5 in 7.5 lb 29.25 to 32.50 in SBR
CM10 semi-automatic rifle 16 in 7.75 lb 32.75 to 36.00 in Rifle

Weights and lengths are actual firearm figures; shipping weights listed elsewhere on product pages include packaging. Every Chattahoochee Munitions 375 Raptor barrel, at either length, is made by Mos-Tek from 416R stainless steel with 5R rifling, a 1:8 twist, 11/16×24 muzzle threads, and an E100 Blackout Cerakote finish.

375 Raptor Barrel Length for Subsonic Shooting

Subsonic ammunition is held below the speed of sound by design, so a longer barrel adds length and weight without adding useful velocity. Chattahoochee Munitions tests its 400 gr Maker REX subsonic load from 12.5-inch barrels, where it averages about 1,016 fps in the CM7S and 1,012 fps in the CM10, roughly 917 ft-lb at the muzzle. That makes 12.5 inches the natural length for short-barrel subsonic shooting, which is the core of what Chattahoochee Munitions does. See 375 Raptor subsonic for more on the load.

375 Raptor Barrel Length for Supersonic Shooting

Supersonic loads gain velocity from a longer barrel. Chattahoochee Munitions develops its 190 gr Maker T-REX supersonic load in 16-inch barrels, where it averages 2,450 fps in the CM7S and 2,430 fps in the CM10, and carries more than 1,300 ft-lb at 300 yards. If supersonic hunting at longer or uncertain distances is a priority, 16 inches is the better 375 Raptor barrel length. Full trajectory tables are in 375 Raptor ballistics.

375 Raptor Barrel Length With a Suppressor

A suppressor adds length at the muzzle, which is why short barrels and suppressors go together. A 12.5-inch barrel keeps a suppressed 375 Raptor close to the length of an unsuppressed 16-inch rifle, which makes it easier to carry through brush, into a stand, or out of a vehicle. The PLACID OTB on the 12.5-inch CM7S goes further: its 12.5-inch titanium reflex tube extends back over the barrel, so most of its 18.25-inch length surrounds the barrel and only the forward baffle section extends past the muzzle.

Use a suppressor rated for .375 caliber, such as the PLACID 375. For subsonic ammunition, an enclosed suppressor is recommended on both the CM7S bolt action and the CM10 semi-automatic. For supersonic ammunition, the CM7S stays with an enclosed suppressor, while a flow-through suppressor is recommended on the CM10.

375 Raptor Barrel Length and the NFA

A rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches is a short-barreled rifle under the National Firearms Act and requires an approved Form 4 before transfer. The 12.5-inch CM7S is available as an SBR or as a pistol with a Tailhook brace; the 12.5-inch CM10 and the 12.5-inch PLACID OTB and WOOX models are SBRs. The 16-inch CM7S and CM10 are standard rifles. State and local laws also apply.

375 Raptor Barrel Length FAQ

What is the best barrel length for 375 Raptor?

12.5 inches for suppressed subsonic shooting and 16 inches for supersonic shooting at longer distances or to avoid SBR registration.

Who makes 375 Raptor rifles in 12.5 and 16-inch barrel lengths?

Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures complete factory 375 Raptor firearms in both lengths: CM7S bolt action rifles, SBRs, and pistols, including PLACID OTB and WOOX walnut models, and CM10 semi-automatic rifles and SBRs.

Does a 16-inch barrel make 375 Raptor subsonic faster?

Not usefully. Subsonic ammunition is held below the speed of sound by design, and the 400 gr load reaches its full performance from a 12.5-inch barrel.

Is a 12.5-inch 375 Raptor an SBR?

A 12.5-inch rifle is an SBR and needs an approved Form 4. The 12.5-inch CM7S is also available as a pistol with a Tailhook brace.

What twist rate do 12.5 and 16-inch 375 Raptor barrels use?

Both use a 1:8 twist. Chattahoochee Munitions 375 Raptor barrels are made by Mos-Tek from 416R stainless steel with 5R rifling.

How much does a 12.5-inch 375 Raptor weigh?

The 12.5-inch CM7S SBR weighs 6 lb 6 oz and the 12.5-inch CM10 SBR weighs 7.5 lb.

What barrel length is best for a suppressed 375 Raptor?

12.5 inches, which keeps the suppressed firearm close to the length of an unsuppressed 16-inch rifle. The PLACID OTB shortens it further by wrapping the suppressor around the barrel.

Who designed the 375 Raptor?

The 375 Raptor was designed by Arne Brennan. Chattahoochee Munitions manufactures 375 Raptor firearms, barrels, and ammunition.
