The CM7S 8.6 Barreled Action provides the foundation for building a complete 8.6 Blackout bolt-action rifle around the Chattahoochee Munitions CM7S action and a 16-inch barrel. Rather than purchasing a complete firearm, customers can start with the barreled action and select the chassis, trigger, grip and magazine configuration that fits their intended build.

The CM7S uses a Remington 700 short-action footprint, three-lug bolt with a 60-degree throw, integrated recoil lug and pinned 20 MOA Picatinny rail. The 16-inch barrel is available with a 1:3 or 1:5 twist, allowing the build to be configured around the projectile and ammunition it is intended to use.

For customers who want to complete the system with CM components, the barreled action can be paired with the CM7S Bolt Action Chassis, TriggerTech R700 Primary, Vertical Precision Crossover Grip and CM-vetted 8.6 Blackout Magazine.

CM offers both twist rates because the appropriate choice depends on projectile construction, projectile weight, ammunition, velocity and intended use. We do not treat either 1:3 or 1:5 as universally correct for every 8.6 Blackout configuration.

Why Choose the 16″ 8.6 Barreled Action?

The 16-inch 8.6 Barreled Action is the longest of the CM7S barreled-action configurations. It is intended for builders who prefer a conventional rifle-length host rather than prioritizing the minimum overall length of our shorter 12-inch and 8-inch configurations.

Barrel length should be selected around the complete system rather than treated as a stand-alone performance specification. Ammunition, projectile, twist rate, suppressor selection and desired overall firearm length all influence which configuration makes the most sense.

In CM testing with subsonic 8.6 Blackout loads, approximately 12 to 12.5 inches has been a particularly useful range for powder utilization in the loads we have evaluated. The 16-inch version provides additional barrel length for customers who prefer a conventional rifle configuration or whose ammunition and intended use benefit from the longer barrel.

Choose 1:3 or 1:5 Twist

CM has worked with 8.6 Blackout since the cartridge’s early introduction, before SAAMI standardization. That experience is why we offer the 8.6 Barreled Action with both 1:3 and 1:5 twist options rather than presenting one twist rate as the answer for every load.

Across our 12- to 12.5-inch configurations, CM testing has generally shown good results with 1:5 twist and projectiles around 300 grains or less, while 1:3 has generally been better suited to heavy subsonic projectiles around 323 grains and above. These are practical observations from the ammunition and configurations we have evaluated, not universal ballistic rules.

Projectile construction, length, weight, velocity and barrel length all matter. The intended ammunition should therefore be considered when selecting the twist rate for a custom build.

Magazine selection is an important part of an 8.6 Blackout bolt-action build. Rather than assuming that any generic short-action magazine will provide the desired feeding characteristics, CM offers a vetted 8.6 Blackout Magazine for the CM7S platform.

A Foundation for a Complete 8.6 Blackout System

The 8.6 Barreled Action allows the customer to decide how much of the final firearm should be configured around CM components. It can serve as the starting point for a custom Remington 700-footprint build or be combined with the CM chassis, trigger, grip and vetted magazine to create a system closely related to our complete CM7S rifles.

This approach also allows the builder to select the stock or rear configuration, optic, suppressor and other accessories around the intended application rather than purchasing a complete rifle and replacing components afterward.

Suppressed 8.6 Blackout Builds

The 16-inch barrel terminates in 5/8×24 muzzle threads for compatible muzzle devices and suppressor mounting systems. Suppressor compatibility should be verified for the specific suppressor, ammunition and firearm configuration.

A bolt-action host also separates ammunition selection from the gas and buffer requirements involved in cycling a semi-automatic firearm. That can be useful when configuring a firearm around specialized subsonic ammunition.

Customers primarily interested in suppressed 8.6 Blackout should compare the 16-inch configuration with the shorter CM7S options. A shorter barrel can reduce the overall length of the finished firearm once a suppressor is installed, while the 16-inch 8.6 Barreled Action is available for builders who prefer the additional barrel length.
