CM10 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle – 12.5″ Cobalt Kinetics Green

The Chattahoochee Munitions CM10 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle packages the large-frame CM10 platform around a compact 12.5-inch .458 SOCOM barrel. Its fast 1:10 twist, 11.5-inch handguard, center-feed AICS magazine architecture and adjustable operating system create a purpose-built semi-automatic platform for heavy .458-caliber ammunition.

Finished in Cobalt Kinetics Green Cerakote with Coyote B5 Systems furniture, this configuration combines the compact dimensions of a short-barreled rifle with the SOCOM XL capability of the CM10 platform. The result is a firearm, magazine and ammunition system designed around heavy and exceptionally long .458-caliber projectiles.

Compact 12.5″ .458 SOCOM Platform

The 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle takes a different approach from the conventional AR-15 implementation of .458 SOCOM. Rather than building around AR-15 magazine dimensions, the CM10 uses a purpose-built large-frame receiver set with an AICS-pattern magazine well and center-feed architecture.

The 12.5-inch barrel and 11.5-inch handguard reduce host length compared with the 16-inch CM10 while retaining the platform’s fast twist, adjustable gas system, adjustable buffer and extended cartridge-length capability.

Although “short barrel rifle” is a commonly used search phrase, the proper classification of this stocked 12.5-inch configuration is a short-barreled rifle (SBR).

12.5″ Fast-Twist .458 SOCOM Barrel

At the center of the 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle is a 12.5-inch barrel manufactured from 416R stainless steel. It uses 5R rifling and a fast 1:10 twist to support exceptionally heavy .458-caliber projectiles.

  • Chambering: .458 SOCOM
  • Barrel Length: 12.5″
  • Material: 416R Stainless Steel
  • Rifling: 5R
  • Twist Rate: 1:10
  • Muzzle Threads: 11/16×24
  • Gas Journal: .875″
  • Gas System: Pistol Length
  • Barrel Extension: Center Feed
  • Finish: Black Cerakote

For more information about heavy-projectile and suppressed applications, see our 458 SOCOM Subsonic guide.

SOCOM XL Capability Without a Different Chamber

The CM10 is chambered in .458 SOCOM. SOCOM XL is not another chambering, and it does not require a different .458 SOCOM cartridge case.

SOCOM XL instead describes the ability to use additional cartridge overall length provided by a compatible firearm and magazine system. That additional space becomes increasingly useful as .458-caliber projectiles become longer and heavier.

Conventional AR-15 magazine dimensions limit cartridge overall length. With an exceptionally long projectile, that restriction requires more of the projectile to occupy space inside the cartridge case.

The CM10’s AICS-based architecture provides additional usable cartridge length, allowing compatible projectiles to be seated farther out.

The chamber doesn’t get longer. The cartridge gets more room.

The 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle combines this SOCOM XL capability with a compact 12.5-inch semi-automatic host.

Modified MDT AICS Magazine

The CM10 lower receiver is machined for AICS-pattern magazines rather than conventional AR10 magazines. SOCOM XL configurations use a 7-round modified MDT metal AICS magazine specifically configured by Chattahoochee Munitions for extended-length .458 SOCOM ammunition.

The magazine presents cartridges along the centerline of the firearm and works with the CM10 center-feed barrel extension. A paddle-style magazine release is located forward of the trigger guard.

This magazine architecture gives the 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle the cartridge-length space required for SOCOM XL while maintaining the standard .458 SOCOM chamber.

650gr Maker REX Semi-Auto Ammunition

Chattahoochee Munitions offers 458 SOCOM Semi Auto Ammo developed specifically around the feeding and operating requirements of the CM10.

The current load uses a 650gr Maker REX solid-copper expanding projectile with factory-new Starline .458 SOCOM brass. It is loaded to a 2.790-inch overall length and uses a propellant configuration selected specifically to provide the gas required for semi-automatic cycling in the CM10.

Propellant type, charge weight and other proprietary loading information are not published.

This is a separate ammunition configuration from the 2.802-inch bolt-action load. The semi-auto ammunition, modified magazine and CM10 operating system work together as an integrated SOCOM XL solution.

Adjustable Gas and Buffer System

A compact big-bore semi-automatic platform can experience different operating requirements as ammunition and suppressor configurations change. The CM10 provides adjustment at both ends of the operating system.

A Superlative Arms .875″ Adjustable Gas Block works with a Melonite pistol-length gas tube. At the rear, an Odin Works Adjustable AR10 Buffer provides an additional point of adjustment.

Together, these components allow the 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle operating system to be tuned around different ammunition and suppressor configurations.

7075-T6 Billet CM10 Receiver Set

The CM10 upper and lower receivers are machined from 7075-T6 billet aluminum around DPMS Low Profile architecture. The platform retains compatibility with 16 TPI barrel nuts, DPMS-pattern barrel extensions and compatible large-frame bolt carrier groups while incorporating the CM10-specific AICS magazine system.

  • AICS-pattern magazine well
  • Center-feed architecture
  • Paddle magazine release forward of the trigger guard
  • Integral trigger guard
  • Weight-reduction machining
  • No forward assist
  • Fire/Safe markings on both sides
  • CM ambidextrous safety

The stock is mounted to a CM Mil-Spec buffer tube with a QD end plate and the Odin Works Adjustable AR10 Buffer.

A Compact Host for Suppressed Applications

Compared with the 16-inch CM10, the 12.5-inch barrel reduces the length of the host firearm by 3.5 inches before a suppressor or other muzzle-mounted component is installed. That reduction becomes particularly useful when managing the overall length of a suppressed system.

The fast 1:10 twist supports exceptionally heavy projectiles, while adjustable gas and buffer systems provide the ability to tune semi-automatic operation around the selected configuration.

For users seeking a compact large-frame .458 SOCOM platform, the 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle brings together the 12.5-inch barrel, SOCOM XL cartridge-length capability and the CM10 semi-automatic operating system.

The 12.5-inch configuration makes the 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle a compact alternative to the 16-inch CM10 while retaining the same center-feed approach and SOCOM XL cartridge-length capability.

With its modified AICS magazine, the 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle provides additional usable cartridge length for compatible heavy .458-caliber projectiles without changing the standard .458 SOCOM chamber.

The adjustable gas system and adjustable buffer give the 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle two points of operating-system adjustment when ammunition or suppressor configurations change.

For shooters building around heavy subsonic ammunition, the 458 SOCOM Short Barrel Rifle combines a fast 1:10 twist, compact 12.5-inch barrel and CM10 semi-automatic architecture in one integrated platform.
